I have a Honda atc 70 that I need to adjust the valves on. I called the local shops and none will work on it because its a 85. I bought a feller guage. I have a glymer manual and tried to do exactly what the book says and I just cant get it right. Ever since my brother played with the valves I haven't been able to get it started. I have fire, and I can smell exhust coming out of the pipe. I get back fires when I try to start and the back fires seem to come from the carb area. There is a little cap over the choke leaver and it pops off once in a while when it backfires. Can someone help, maybe specific instructions on how to adjust the valves correctly. I will also clean the carb again. Please any help is greatly appreciated. If you need more information, please let me know.
Thanks a million

Make sure that the valve is in the closed position before adjusting. Turn engine over until there is the mose clearance and then use the feeler gauges.

think for a second-------4 strokes---Suck-Squeeze-Bang- and Blow.
When an intake valve is OPEN----Exhaust is Closed----turn the engine until a rocker arm travels down--(Doesnt matter which one)-and adjust the OTHER one--

Just so I understand right, turn the engine until the rocker arm is down, then adjust the other one and vise versa? And not do it when both rocker arms are up(free)

squeeze-Blow????????
Exactly----free rocker is closed valve-----If the opposite is open---then you can be POSITIVE that the one your working with is closed. Just keep in mind ---PAy attention to which one your working with--because most engines have 2 specs---Intake and exhaust.

May have a burned intake valve if its run too hot or too tight on valve clearance. Do a compression check too.
Ive seen a similar problem with Honda 4 cylinders whose valves got tighter as the engine got hot.
