View Full Version : timing chain question- new questions please help

this weekend im gonna replace the timing chain in my 250sx. whats the best way do it? i know i got to remove the valve cover, side case cover, and the tentioner. do i have to remove the cam? or will the chain be loose enough to take off and put on after i take out the tensioner?
i now i need a service manual but i dont have enough $$$ after i buy a chain.

Like you said, you really should have a service manual but...... No, you don't have to remove the cam from what I am used to. Should be enough slack.

Take out the tensioner or you mean just loosen it?

I have the CD manual and can send you pictures if you want?

Where are you from in PA? I'm in Slatington PA 18080.

Where are you getting the chain and how much?

If you have a digital camera, take pictures as you go along.. i'm getting into this soon enough and would like to see it done as you go

Oh i have a manual... but i'm sure you are well aware that the " clymer " is not always 100 % accurate with their directions.

Huffa- i was talking about the little spring tentioner thing on the front of the motor. taking it out. unless i dont have to. as far as the pics. na as long as it sounds like i got the right pieces to take off i should be good. and i live in fayetteville pa 17222. as far as the chain i'll probley get it somplace local. and from looking at the prices online (i havent called yet) it'll probley be $65.+

Bigredhead- if i can get the camera to work ill take some pics. my g/f dropped it on the ice on x-mas and couldn't get it to turn back on. i havent looked at it yet.

i took the valve cover off. i could move the chain a good half inch or so. so know i know were all the noise was coming from. im glad it didnt skip timing while i was running it.
edit- i found a service manual on here for a 250es (thanx Deepa)so it should be useful for the 250sx and wow i didnt think this was gonna be a hard job. i gotta take out the clutch and stuff to get the chain out. im glad i found it or i would have been lost when i got that far.

If it has never been apart before you will also need a case gasket because it will probibly be stuck to both sides. Never worked on an sx but on the 250 es you have to remove both clutches and the oil pump to get the chain off the engine sprocket. Also it is no big deal to remove the cam because you will have to put it back on its timeing anyway.Take the cam tensioner right out and you will then see how it works.

what size is the nut that holds the first clutch on? my sockets only go to 24mm and its to small.
whats the best way to hold the first clutch to keep it from spinning?
i found some plastic from the chain guides under the screen so im gonna have to replace them. will they come right out once everything out of the way or will i have take the rest of the head off?
i also found a broken bolt under the screen to. so know i got to find out what thats to.

never mind on the size its a 27mm.
just need it to stop spinning when puting the nut back on.
still need the guide info.
were the cheepest place to get a chian? the two local dealers want $106. at one and $112. at the other

The only way I have ever removed the two clutch nuts is with an inpact wrench. They just spin right off and back on again. Don`t forget the one is a left hand thread.
Cam chains here in Canada are about $90-00 tax included. Aftermarket chains are just as good and are about $5 $10 cheaper.
