First off....does turning in the pilot screw make it leaner or richer? Common sense dictates it would make it richer if you're cutting off air supply the more it's screwed in. I just put a carb kit in and it's takes about 10-15 kicks at full choke to start it (30-40 deg. outside temp.). Seems like it's running lean cause it wants to die when I take off choke. Did what manuals suggest (shop and owners). 2.5 turns out to start. It starts to die about 1 turn from all the way in and as I back it out it starts idling faster and stays constant all the way out till pilot screws is ready to fall out. I leave it about 4 turns out and it runs fine though throttle range. Maybe a slight hesitation off idle but hardly noticable. Here's the MAJOR problem I'm having.....once she's warmed up and I shut it off, no way in hell it'll start again until it cools down enough to use the choke again. I'm running 142 main...stock slow and pilot...clip position 2 down from top...UNI filter/stock air box and lid...TRX 450r stock pipe with HRC tip. When I rebuilt carb, the rubber O-ring in pilot hole was torn and there was no washer. According to manual it looks like a small washer goes in hole after rubber washer? Is this correct? Just want to make sure I put the washer in carb kit in the right place on pilot. It seems like I'm running lean. After it's shut off hot, I tried 1/4 turn increments out from all the way in with no luck to start it hot. Do I need to bump up my slow jet size? Need help before I tear it all apart again....Oh yeah...sometimes when I get it started cold she smokes like a beotch (white). And I never post questions till I do the researh from past posts off this group and others but I tried all previous suggestions. Thanks for any help from all you 350X guru's (or anybody else).

Well.... My "Go-Go" 350X use to start up great cold... but if you stalled it in the woods hot; you got a work out. It has a UNI filter, and a Cobra Exhaust and we think it has a high compression piston as well. I had a 142 in it and had the clip moved one up from when we were first dialing it in at Trikefest 04. It would also backfire/pop a bit on deceleration.

I took it to a shop and I had him tune up the barb a bit. We ended up taking down to a 140 and putting the clip back in the original condition. Runs much better now and it starts a little harder at first, but if you stall it hot it'll start right back up. Plug looks good too!! :welcome:

If it's stock I'd stick with all the stock jetting. I always start the screw at 1.5 turns out and rarely move 1/2 turn in either direction. The order of the screw should be screw, spring, washer and then oring. Thats so when you turn the screw it doesn't eat up the oring.... The end of that screw needs to be perfect or it won't run right. It should be very LIGHTLY bottomed and then backed out. And even one drop of dirt or gunk anywhere in the fuel passages and it will act funky like the four turns out you described.

Does turning pilot screw in make it richer then??? I have it right then (o-ring,washer,spring). Is the screw that touchy that it would cause it not to start when hot? I might have to take it apart again to double check but with all new jets and o-rings/seals, and a total clean with carb cleaner it should be fine.

I believe turning out is richer not in. Do a search here on jetting, some guys have put together some great posts on jetting and air or fuel screws. Having to keep the choke on or the screw way out seems like you are simply not getting the fuel into the motor, have you pulled the plug when it won't start?? If it's dry and pouring a teaspoon of fuel in there fires it up you still have a fuel delivery problem. I've never bought a new jet unless I was changing size, they just don't wear out. If your ATC is stock with stock jetting and every passage is clean and you started about 1.5 to 2 turns out or whatever your models spec is then I'd look at other possible problems. Smoking could be top end valve/cam or ring problems and anything I ever owned that had a tired top end didn't start well when hot. Have you checked the compression when it's hot?

Yes,turning the screw in will make it richer. After each time you turn it,bump the throttle once or twice,it should change the idling the more you turn it.With your little mods(filter, pipe),i would go with a 140 main and possibly go up to a 45 pilot. The clip should be fine in the stock setting. When it's hot, give it a 1/4 throttle as you kick it over, most 350x's are known to start that way.

Just talked to a buddy of mine and he thought I should put clip back down one notch to stock position in order to give it a little more fuel. How much does clip position come into play upon start up? The chart I have says it has no affect till about 1/8 throttle....
