Does anyone know if it has a voltage regulator? I replaced the light bulb and when I hit the gas it blew again. Also, is it supposed to have a switch to turn them on and off, because I have a stray wire hanging out of the headlight housing. Any help would be appreciated.

No - No regulator--
The extra green wire is for hi beams--if it was equipped--but it wasnt---No headlight switch--lights are on all the time----
Now---Headlight and taillight both must be in the circuit--12 volt automotive bulbs dont work--they must be 6v bulbs --and make sure they are in the sockets properly--they can go in backwards-------Sorry to babble----

MY yt125 doesnt have a switch for the lights. My book says you have an ignition coil, cdi unit, ignition charging (exciter) coil,ac generator/magneto, and pickup coil. Uncle d always beats me to the anwer.

Where the headlight is on the diagram--There is a green wire that goes to nowhere-----????---I think Yamaha had plans for accessory packages and just never released them---Same thing for brake lights--

Ask Yamaha it should be 6 volt 35 watt or something. If it is blowing it usually because someone put in 12 volt by mistake.

Hyperparts .com has the bulbs ya need---if I remember they were only 2 or 3 bucks---My yt had the same thing happen----until I plugged in the Correct bulbs--

Also-pay close attention to the tail light- The bulb CAN go in backwards--and cause a "DIM LIGHT" situation . If ya dont have a wiring diagram --go to the front of this site and D/L one----It will save your sanity!

All systems have a voltage regulator, but its not always a separate component, and may be built into another component. The cheap fix is a generic volt pack from Dennis Kirk for about $15.

Running a lower voltage 6v bulb in a higher voltage 12v system will cause it to pop easily but put out more light before it does. Running a 12v bulb in a 6v system will not blow as easily as the correct bulb, but it will also not out out as much light. You will not blow a bulb from running the incorrect wattage rating. The lights will only draw the wattage they need. If the bulb wattage is too high, your elecitrical system will not be able to deliver the power it needs, and it will light very dim, but will not blow.

They may be out there, but I do not know of any ATV that uses anything other than a 12v system.

Tim---
Anything with an electric starter MUST use 12v---However, yamaha's from the early 80's ,with Pull starters, ran the CDI box on AC current, with no regulator, or rectifier. The service manuals tell us to check for 5-8 volts at 2500 rpm when troubleshooting light problems-.
I dont know why-and I cant explain it --but 1157 taillight bulbs, (automotive use) Popped in 5 minutes in my trike, but were extremely bright before they did. This tottaly defies the laws of physics--but I went thru 5 or 6 bulbs before I ordered the 6 volt bulbs from hyperparts. No problems since--
