Need Help With Engine On 87 Big Red

Ok,guys i have a problem I know someone might be able to help, on my 87 red 250es IT ran perfect till I changed the oil,and cleaned out the carb, now it is running real ruff ( like a big cam) and is blowing blue -black smoke alot? I havent changed anything on the carb that I know of, does anyone know how to check the choke could this be the problem my chilton book says either water, carb adj, clogged fuel line ?choke? this thing never smoked at all before just trying to see if anyone might have had this same trouble thanks scott

Sounds like a choke problem. Biggest issues are where the cable enters the carb. Make sure it is clean before you screw it back in and make sure it goes right down and seats properly. It is hard to get at as you will now know but if the plunger doesn`t seat right down and if the cable is not returning fully you will have the problems you describe.
