Thinking again about dropping 6 bills on a DuraBlue X-33 axle assembly for the 85 R. This axle is only listed for an 86 R and TRX. What is the difference between the 85 and 86 axle? Sure it will work?

You will more than likely need to change out the rear swinger, bearing carrier and brake system. Willie did that on his flat track racer and realized that you need all those parts to work together. The swinger...cuz it has different rear brake mounting system. So just depends on what you want to spend on it. I have a +4 dura blue axle on my 85R.

I myself would opt for the $200 brand new G-force axle from Rocky moutain. Its made for a 400ex but fits the later model 250R (85 and up) carrier and swingarm without any problem. Only thing is the splines for the wheel hubs are different. Run the 400ex ones to cure that and the bolt pattern is the same of course.

well i know i have put a 86 axle in a 85 carrier.the 86r i just traded to travis had an 85 swinger,rear brake setup,and carrier,but i put a 86 axle in it.everything worked fine.the chain lined right up,and did not affect the brakes either.

Im not sure how that is working since every part number is differnt and I have seen the braking set up on the 86 and 85 since willie has the 86 and me the 85. But if its working some how cant beat that. Im just not sure I would trust it going at high speeds hehehe.

I am going through this right now.
I came to the conclusion that it is best to swap the entire rear end. I bought an 86 swinger, and complete lonestar axle, carrier, and fade nut.
I believe the 86 Axle will work in the 85 bearing carrier, but the 85 axle will not work with the 86 bearing carrier.
Derrick I have a Stock or +2.. i'm not sure Durablue for sale right now if you are interested, its off my 85.

One of my 85Rs has a 86R Durablue Eliminator 2+2 axle. The stock hubs also fit fine.

i think travis is gonna post pics. of the setup on my old r.i rode like that for awhile with no problems.the axle is spaced the same on either year, but the carriers are different outside diameters.the 85 carrier is too small for the 86 swinger, and vise versa.even though the spocket hubs are different, they too must still line up with the same front sprocket.the 85 swinger is not offset different then the 86.thats why the swap.but the carriers are different.i know the part numbers are different, and they are different parts, but rear carrier bearings are the same inside diameter of the bearing race, therfore they will accept the same axle.
my buddy, tripod troy, dropped an 89 trx axle in his 85 atc 250r.went right in. but there is somethin different about the carriers from the trx to the atc.i am not sure what the difference is.i think the carriers have to stay specific to the atc.

You can use a 86 & up axle in a 85 carrier, but not an 85 axle in an 86 & up carrier. The sprocket hub offset is the only difference. I have a dura blue axle in my 85-R that I just took out of my 89 TRX. The 85 axle & carrier is an odd size. The bearings are all the same. An 85 axle will hit the adjustment side of the 86 & up carrier. An 85 carrier with a 86 or up axle will have a big gap on the sprocket side, but will not hurt a thing. The seal still seals & the chain still lines up perfect. Buy the 86 & up axle Derrick I'm positive It will fit. A 400ex axle is the same as a 86 R other than the hub splines.

I'll try to get it cleaned up, I didn't look at the pics before I posted, can't really tell anything. Any particular pic/angle pic, I can take it.

I went through this years ago. The diff that I had was that the sprocket hubs are different between the 85 and 86. The sprockets mount on different sides of the hub. To fix this, you just order the hub that is needed from Dura blue. Slip it on and go. No need to change carriers or brake setups. The DB hubs will fit the standard heavy duty axles as well as factory axles. Not sure on the others!
