View Full Version : What's wrong with my bike?
My atc 200x 1983 is really startin' to get my nerves goin. I still have that rear brake line/tube problem, and now my front sproket is shot. So now should I change both sprokets and the chain? and what size chain do I need? And how many teeth on the sproket do I need? There's more.... When I look at my bike from the back, it looks like the frame is goin towards the right and the wheels to the left. When I push the bike forwards the chain loosens and when I push it backwards it tightens up so much you would think it's gonna snap. Also it's next to impossible to even push it (even with 2 people). One last thing..... I would pullup a bit on my grab bar and you can see that part on the axle just beside the inside of the rear sproket move up and down. Is that a bearing in there? Is it busted?

Im a Yammi type guy =so I really dont know for sure --but it sounds like your rear Carrier isnt bolted down----or your bearings are-----SUPER TRASHED. If your rear end moves --it distorts the alignment of the rear tires in relation to the frame---and Angles your chain--hence the trashed front sprocket---Find out whats moving around and why BEFORE you replace the broken sprocket.

hmmm,
sounds like somethig is loose, take a look at the chain adjusters, and the larger swingarm/ adjustment bolt. they should be set at the same spot on each side
(if your frame is straight) and tight. if its not that could be the rear carrier.
have someone hold onto the front of the ATC while you shake the rear axle
side to side hard. that should point to the problem
Could be shot carrier bearings of a bent axle causin it to tightin up.

$5 bet on a seized right side carrier bearing, but dont overlook a locked up brake too. New chain and sprockets too, whatever forces damaged the sprocket may have damaged the chain and that can damage the rear sprocket.
Thank you gus very much...well from my glory days of skateboarding, I know how a busted bearing feels and that is exactly the same prob that i have now.. I just don't know much about 3-wheelers( it's my first one). The chain adjusters are fine. That was the first thing I checked out. I am planing on buying a chain and sproket set anyways. It's winter up here in montreal now so could the cold be a problem? The brakes aren't locked up...mainly cause I don't have anymore brakes. I gotta buy new pads. so....So far it's new chain and sproketsand Break pads. Seems like I should buy a new axel too. how much does that go for? and is it possible to get an axel of better quality than stock? Also, i'm still having tha absolute worst luck finding that darn rear stainless steel braided break line/tube/pibe(whatever it's called).

I got my braided brake lines off ebay. I got mine for a 350x, but would probably work on the 200x. I think I paid $95 for both brake lines and shipping. Durablue makes axles for the 200x. Don't forget to get all new bearings. and you might want to look into the bushings and bearings and swingaxle bolt also, for the front of the swingarm. "Russell" is the brand of brake lines, see if your local dirt bike shop has "Russell" brake lines.

No. The metal will shrink such a small amount you cant measure it.
NO BRAKES???? Now theres a fast rider!!!
Those rear axles are a pain to get apart, they are usually rusted in. Id not spend on a new axle just yet, Ive severely beaten the stock axle on my 86 R and its in fine shape.

DOH! (slaps self in forehead) :wondering
The part about the chain looseening one way and tightening the other might be a loose carrier, the chain pulling on it could rotate it one way or the other, and one way tightens and the other loosens. May not be bearings after all:wondering :wondering

83 200x doesnt have an axle carrier that rotates. it adjusts the chain up at the frame/swingarm mount..
Well , I'll be.... I just took a nice long look at the bike with a few friends and almost have the problem solved. You see, the reason the bike looked crooked was because only one side of the bike was tightened when I had to fix the chain for whatever reason. I did't know you had to do both sides. DUH! I also got the front sproket casing off. That slittle sproket is FINISHED. I guess I should spring for both sprokets and a chain kit, eh? How does 82$ Canadian sound? good deal? Now soon I'm going to check out the brakes 'cause the wheels still lock up for a second when you push it. And finally, the brake piece I am trying to find..... It's the brake hose that goes from the rear fluid cup to that other peice. I found stainless steel braided hoses but the end pieces will never go on my bike, cause the hose I have now is held on with clamps and not screw-on.

Bent rotor maybe? or will that cause the brake to feel mushy? Not sure on that, bet for sure replace chaion and sprockets as a set.

The chain adjuster on that bike is on the swingarm bolt, it moves forward and backwards. The bolt that adjust it probably snaped (i had that happen) just check out how everything works, its real simple, also make shure both sides are even.
