hi everyone, I just bought an 84 250r 2 days ago and need some help.
It starts o.k, 7-10 kicks cold. after warm no problem. Idles good, a little smoke, but when i throttle it hesitates and bogs briefly then revs hi and very well.same thing while riding, lots of hesitation and then go like he**. all gears. There is fuel in the air box and filter, and oil at the exhaust gasket, quite a bit, so I found the carb rebuild kit for it. buying it today. My questions are: Is carb difficult to rebuild? How do i check bottom end oil? no manual yet. (buying that soon as well). What else should I be looking for as potential causes? Im going to drain fluids and replace. Any recommendations on oils and premix ratio? It looks like a stock machine except for the twist throttle.Im new here and appreciate any help and opinions. Thanks in advance

Since you just bought it what I would do if it was mine would be to go through the whole fuel system from one end to the other and ensure it was clean then I would verify the jets in the carb were what the factory sent it out with or REAL close, when I sell something with a 2 cycle engine I fatten up the jetting where it smokes real good so the new owner wont take it down a road WOT for 10 miles then call me crying when the engine fries heh
You also need to ensure the ignition system and ALL the connections on the harness is clean and tight, make sure the exhaust is NOT restricted with a mouse nest or what ever..

There is fuel in the air box and filter
That happened to me too, i replaced the float, and the needle and seet and that didnt work and that is what everybody said needed to be fixed. Then I finnaly gave in and brought it to honda:( and where the float sits and where the needle goes needed a clean, so make sure you give the carb a really good clean!
You know what yo have to do now......post:pics: :pics: :pics: :pics: :pics: :pics:

I paid $600 for it. Hope to have some pics this weekend. It looks pretty much stock to me. need some more references and manual to compare with. The motor was given a bad black spray paint job while in the frame Overspray not too bad but hard to get off frame, still tryin. but everything looks good and in place.
Sounds like your needle jet has some crap in it, is worn out, or your floats are set too low.

Congrats on the trike and welcome to 3WW.
Sounds like just a dirty carb. Take it apart, clean everything with carb cleaner spray, blow out all the passages with compressed air and scrub the needle jet using a Q-tip and some carb cleaner. Oil at the exhaust port is gas and mix that isnt getting burnt because of too much of it, its called stove piping. Try Amsoil or Blue Marble.

I run Klotz in my 350 triple.
For premix ratio, its all a matter of taste, so to speak. I ran 40:1 in my 87 tecate4 and i ran 50:1 in my sleds.
Make sure that the throttle cable isnt binding anywhere also...

just run 32:1. it works, i never foul plugs and all 2 strokes smoke, but as said above, you need to clean your carb....and you dont check the transmission oil, if you dont know how old it is, just change it, if it is nasty looking i would change it and go for a short ride and change it again to get all the crap out, after that, just change it every couple rides or so....use 10w30, try not to use full synthetic because it can make your clutches slip more and you will burn your clutch up quicker. you can use synthetic blend without a problem, thats what i use, i havent ever tried using gear oil mostly because 10w30 has worked and i try not to fix anything that isnt broken.

I agree that the throttle cable is sticking maybe. The hesitation sounds like the air screw is out of adjustment. You need more air less fuel for snappier throttle response. Could be a heavilly oiled filter, dirty filter or both so clean or replace it. I always run 32:1 espcially in an older bike, I've haven't had plug fouling problems with that. I change the tranny oil every 3 rides or every time I go to the dunes. On my 86 R's there's a check boly in the case so look for that on yours maybe. Change it often with 85 wt tranny oil. 10W 30 would work ok as well. I use dumonde tech racing transmission oil as it is reccomended for older bikes. Good luck.

If all else fails, replace your reeds w/new ones {boyseen} cheaper than stock. Most manufactures recomend replacing them evry 6hrs if you are racing it. If it runs bad on the bottom ,ok in mid range, and great on top, ...it is because your reeds are warped and are not laying flat anymore....which gives you bad throttle response. But it is probably just your carb as everyone and yourself stated.

Thanks for the help guys! I dont think its the throttle cable. I ran it yesterday with the air filter off and fuel is splashing into airbox. Filter was full of fuel as well.

Thanks for the help guys! i want to take carb apart but probably wont have a manual till next week (bike bandit). How quick are they on parts(shipping)? Are there any other places to look for parts?

Welcome to 3 wheelerworld. Bikebandit is a great place to go and look at schematics, also to order parts, they are rather pricey though. Try www.denniskirk.com or www.rockymountainatv.com ebay is also an option but you got to watch out for imitation parts, they are not exact matches for OEM parts. As for your fuel problem I think you need to clean the carb real good and adjust the float level. I wish I could be more help about oil levels but I have an 85 and I am not sure if they are the same as the 84. I do recommend using Bel-Ray gear saver oil in the motor/transmission.As for pre-mix, whatever you have easy access to . There are so many good 2-cycle oils on the market today I dont think you can go wrong. Good Luck GREG
ps . if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should be able to take that carb apart and clean it up without a manual. it is not difficult at all.

It doesnt seem like it would be too difficult. Im not sure on how to start adjusting the air/fuel settings (screws).?

Go to the 3ww home page and click on the specifications link for your machine. You should find everything you need there.
