My 86 has one dot each, probably the same principle for both engines. Put the piston at TDC and the balance shaft all the way down, the marks should align either at TDC or BDC, or some combination of all that. They align the crank and balancer shafts to prevent tooth jarring vibration and bearing damage.

Check a shop manual- There may be two sets of dots for some unknown Factory/assembly procedure--Im not doubting anyones expertise- But if the dots are wrong- You CAN chatter those gears to death in a matter of minutes.Advice is a beautiful thing--but you're looking at the real thing-we arent.

put on the balance shaft sprocket first lining up the dot on the shaft to the dot on the inner splines, then line up the dot on the crankshaft with the inner dot on the crankshaft sprocket. Before you get th sprocket all the way down make sure the dot on the outer teeth of the balance shaft line uo with the outer do on the crankshaft sprocket. Hope that helps here's a pic out on the manual plus a real pic.

both shafts have to line up to the gears, and the gears lined up together

The service manual gives all the exact details on the 'dots' I strongly suggest you read the manual.
A service manual is the most valuable tool in your tool box....

I'd have to agree with that totally. The first thing I bought after I bought mine was the manual!
