Hi Guys

Please give me your thoughts on this. I just finished making a swing arm skid plate, just used normal fibreglass for the first one to see how it comes out. Looks pretty good however I don't know how the fibreglass will stand up to a real beating. Could be a good thing for someone who is just restoring an ATC250r and not wanting to destroy it too much. I just layed up a "Carbon Fibre" plate to see how it looks, pretty neat I think, however with carbon fibre being $60 per metre I don't know if it will sell. Used about 1/2 a metre plus resin on the first one.
Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated.

you have to vaccum it using sealed bags and all that ****.. it's not easy from what i've seen before..

the price is relevant. i think you could sell those on e-bay.. explain material cost and it's all relevant.. LIGHT WEIGHT !!!! and STRONG !

Thanks for your input guys. I just pulled the Carbon Fibre plate out of the mould, looks pretty good, just have to touch up a few spots where the resin was a bit thin.
No vac bags, I just made a mould off a NOS plate, layed it up by hand. Haven't done any carbon fibre work before so this is a new experience for me. I'm gonna stick this one up on ebay and see if there is any interest. Here is a pic of the carbon fibre version.

Show us a pic after you hit it with a big hammer like hititng a rock.

Last I heard/seen fiberglass or CF breaks pretty easy I bet the CF skid will break like a vforce reed under the slightest impact.... just my opinion

im betting that he didnt make it as thin as a carbon reed...duh....but i do hope that he used a few layers of fiberglass with a final layer of carbon, because the carbon will def snap easily, it needs to be reinforced with at least 2 or 3 good thick layers of fiberglass first, if you dont want to use carbon for all of it.....

You are kind of correct, Carbon Fibre is not the most suitable for impact, but then I didn't really have in mind impact damage when I made this, I kind of figured this is an asthetic accessory and would probably appeal to the rider who is more into looks than aggressive riding.
However I can easily make these out of kevlar, no problem, just doesn't have the same visual impact as carbon fibre.
In the layup of this one I used 2 layers of 175gm Carbon Fibre, and sandwiched one layer of 160gm surfboard woven cloth in between, I think I will bulk up the next one with some more surfboard cloth, should make it just about right.
