Does anyone here think that 1400 dollars is to much for a factory new, never ran 85 ATC 250R motor? I am building a 250R and dont have a motor for it. I dont know much about them and was wondering if thats a bad deal. Was the 86 motor better? ANY INFO WILL REALLY HELP.

Thanks Denn

That seems pretty high for a motor that is difficult to verify it's authenticity. Most of the "crate motors I have seen are actually 86 or 87's that could have come out of scrapped trikes.

Even if the motor has never been ran, it will still need to be rebuilt just from sitting. On engines that sit for 20 years, the sleeve will usually be rusted, rings stuck, and the seals will be dried or cracked (mine were very hard). Often the clutch can also be stuck. I would rather have one that was ridden hard than one that just sat on a shelf...

Look around, I see TRX engines for 400-800 pretty often, cheaper if they need to be rebuilt. If nothing else, buy a trashed 250R trike for $600 and rebuild the motor, keeping the rest for parts.

From the seat, I can't tell a difference in power from any of the motors, 85-89. I personally have a 85 cylinder, 86 trans, 87 piston, 88 rod and 89 clutch...

Yep like kaysen said that seems a lot for a NOS engine....they go for $850 to $1200 on ebay.......i bought a NOS engine for my 250r had to change the piston and most of the rubber seals in the engine ......so bank on some more cost even if it is NOS......

Thanks for the insite guys. I see what you mean. You have me thinking though, I got a new 86 350x engine, I wonder if that is going to need to be gone through like that.. I hope not.
