View Full Version : Weird smoking phenomenon

Well, this is weird to me but you guys can probably pinpoint my issues in a second.

For a while now the ol' '82 185s has been putting out some blue smoke.
"No big deal," everyone said, "because the machine runs well. Don't worry about it. Don't touch it."
The smoke got a bit worse, quite gradually.
"Don't worry about it,'' everyone said Again, "because the machine runs well."
Well, today during very heavy duty riding (muck, steep hills and pulling a CAR-sized trailer with cargo weighting a total of maybe 500 lbs, including the trailer) I notice I'm down noticeably on power. Yes, I know, the bike is not made to pull fully loaded trailers that were made for cars or trucks to tow.
But I also know my trike. And it was struggling where it shouldn't have been.

Also today during this very rugged ride, (and here's the weird part, at least to me) under engine braking during steep downhills, the smoke was very much worse. Holy cow that thing was puffing like a Rastafarian god during a holy holiday when it was going down steep inclines under engine braking!

So what say you?
Time for rings? Piston too?
Just a valve adjustment?
End of the world?

Thank you in advance once again!

She's probably in need of a bore one size over what you have, a new piston and rings. With out specing it out with micrometer i cant really say but this is what it sounds like. Could be your vavle guide seals. The best thing to do is to run a compression test and see what its pulling there.

Thank you Slothminx for the advice. Will do.
Anyone else want to weigh in?
Cheers!

sounds like the machine is getting tired. you need to be saving up for a bore job .
The next thing that is most often overlooked is the problem you described during engine braking. During engine braking the throttle is shut and the engine rpm is higher than it would normally be at that throttle position, therefore it is creating more vaccuum on the intake tract...and more vaccuum on the intake tract means if your valve guides, valve stems, and valve stem seals are worn it will draw oil past the valve seal and around the worn out guide into the intake tract and into the combustion chamber.....And smoke!!!
