my 84 250r wont shift into 5th gear. also, 1st and neutral are a full shift apart. neutral and 2nd gear are a full shift apart. thus making me have to double shift to 2nd. the previous owner messed with the shift pattern so his girlfriend could shift into neutral easier    . i dont think this guy could have split the cases, but whatevers wrong, id like to fix it tomorrow.

i remember now, that the first day i owned the 250r i was cruising along in 1st, and the chain which was too loose, so it jammed up in the front sprocket and broke off a few teeth. when this happened, the bike locked up, because the chain was stopping the sprocket from turning.

if anyone in the az area would help me rebuild the bottom end, i would pay good money and help out in any way i can. i dont trust myself to do a bottom end rebuild. someone told me that i should inspect the shift detent, which is behind the clutch plates. i dont have a torque wrench, can i still take apart the clutch, then snug the clutch spring bolts with a regular wrench?

i know ive posted about this before, im sorry for wasting your time and space but i really need this fixed. thanks for your help :beer

You don't need a torque wrench until it's time to put it back together. Surely you know someone that you can borrow one from for an afternoon when the time comes?

il have to see if i can get one lent, but is it a big deal if the clutch spring bolts arent down to perfect spec? i took one off and it was pretty snug, i wonder if i could get away with just tightening them down after im done,

lol i took my whole clucth apart and plates and springs, when i put it back toghther i just used a socket wrench to do it, i tightend them kinda hard , and my clutch is normal. so i dident use a torge wrench for the job. ;)

Yep will work, until the bolts rattle loose or you strip the thread by over tightening. Anything like this needs a torque wrench, You could try going to a local workshop and asking if you could borrow one for a couple of days, or buy one as you will need it alot. I went out and bought a small one for $30. Ive used it so much its earned its money back 10 times over.

well if i remeber good enough, my bolts have a stopping point. So i basicly just screwed them in till they were in all the way. Lol i never put bolts back in with out using somthing to prevent that from happing. I used some glue type for bolts i think maybe is called nylock im not sure, and i do use silicone some times.

This is the assembly you should be looking at.... number 6 and 7 are probably what have been messed with, probly ground out new groves in the star (no.7) or fliped something around is my guess, or one of the teeth on the star is worn or broken, not allowing part no.19 catch if they have been alterd you will see it quick, they will look like fresh ground metal whatever he did., if ya feel the need you can mail it too me ill fix er for shipping and parts mind you that could get costly with shipping...im on the otherside of the freakin contanet almost.

Be careful when tightening down the clutch spring bolts. They only require 7-9 ft lbs of torque and will easily snap off. That's the way they are on the water pumpers anyway.

What you need to do is call the guy you got it from.. and either take the bike to him or have him come over to your place and show you what he did.

i called the sob back, but i signed the bill of sale with 'bike sold as is' in giant print on the top :( the first owner messed with it, the guy i bought it from just let it rot in his garage. im starting to question the guy i bought it from though, 300 head kit my arse. hopefully i can have this thing fixed by next week, my friends 300ex is in need of a beating.

does anyone know the lbs. of torque i should put the bolts to on my air cooled r?

is part 7 aka shift star still available? i called honda and they put me on hold for an hour, so i hung up.

do i have to split the cases to replace the shift star?
thanks guys youve been a great help.

It Is Not Availabe. Your Best Bet Is To Find A Used Motor Or Trans On Ebay Or Someone Here On The Site. Pull It Apart First. Then See What You Need. My Buddy Has 84 R Motor Parts Out The Butt. Let Me Know. Max
