Ok on my 78 atc 70 I am trying to get the rear axle out so I can put in my new axle bearings. Problem is the brake drum will not come off. Am I missing something here? I took off the right side hub, axle sleeve, and now the drum is next right? Any help would be great as I would like to get this apart and new bearing in tonight so I can take it for its maiden voyage tomorrow morning. Thanks a million

It could be the drum is rusted to the splines of the axle. It may take a BFH to get it off / out. Just don't mess up the splines / threads.

Well the drum is already junk so I think I may just heat it up tomorrow morning and put the nut on the axle and a block of wood at the end and start pounding. Hopefully it works.

tilt the trike on its side and spray like pb blaster oil down in the splines and let it soak it in also release the tension on the rear brakes the pads arent grabbing the drum.

Ok Got the axle out but now the stinkin bearings are froze to the carrier. How should I try to get them out? Already pounded on them for a while with a hammer and punch with no luck. Should I just heat them up?

a good trick is weld a bead around the race and till make it shrink...

if you dont have a welder that may be difficult though.

Weld a bead on the inner or outer race?

BFH and a good brass punch should handle it. If not what I do is weld a bolt straight up and down in the bearing race sorta like this, (1), then while the welds are still hot take the hammer and punch and pound directly on the bolt. Good trick also for when you have no surface to put your punch on to remove a bearing race.

Good luck.

Well, I got them out. Took the torch to them and got them real hot and beat the heck out of them.Worked great.
