does anyone know if there will be any problems changing an 82 250r motor into an 83 frame? i have tyhe rear motor mounts for all of them, and was wonderign if they will swap directly or if somethign stupid will mes sme up, i know the motor mount holes are verry verry close, but what about the shifter and kicker shafts and the carbs and exaust? does anyone know.

Survey says..... EEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

The 81-82R has a longer shifter shaft that WILL hit the frame on a 83-84R frame. You either have to change the shifter shaft, or mod your frame.

I believe a 83-84 in a 81-82 works though.,..

I dont think the motros are the same. I havent looked at parts and cross referenced them, but I do believe the 83's have a larger porting job??

the 83-84r's made about 6 more horses than the 82-81 motors. ive seen 28 for a stock 84, and low twenties for the first generation.

The swingarm/motor mount bolt from 81-82 will not interchange with the 83-84 air cooled "R"s ,,, that in its self would be a red flag imo that would need closier attention as too why.

ok here is my problem, i tought about cutting a corner or 2, i have a complete runnign 82 r motos, figured sinc eit has lower compression than the 83-84 it woudl be a better more controllable tyrail rig for my girlfriend, but the 83 motor i have is blown up and in pieces, and i just wanted a few oppinions before i tried to tackle this project. i tried just rough fitting the 82 motor into the 83 frame last night and the shifter shaft does not clear the frame it hits the foot peg mount, so i gues si will just rebuild the 83 motor and try my best to find a axle carrier also. and just mic out the bore and determine how oblonged it is and determine how much it needs to be bored. but it is a nic eboke other than that.

Brapp bro, you need to slow down when you are typing!. lol. There are compression differences and port timing changes that are different between the years as well as the carbs. The 81R had 6.6:1, 82/83 had 6.7:1 - the 83 having the 30mm carb, the 84R had 7.3:1 compression. I've seen 18 - 20hp quoted for the '81, 20hp for the '82, 23 or 24hp for the '83 and 28 or 29hp for the '84.

Brapp.... Dude... I got 2 83-84R lower ends here.... I'm looking for a 81-82 lowerend... The one 83-84R motor has the complete 300R jug on it (that stays here!) but the case leaks oil... haven't looked to close at it yey... hopefully maybe just a loose drain plug?. I know whenever I moved the motor upstairs, theres fresh oil under it. The other 83-84 motor I have has the jug off it. Someone tried to port and polish and gave up. If you'd like to trade a 81-82R one for one of my 82-84 ones, I'm all for it! Then it'll fit in your frame, and I'll have the correct year motor in my 82R Ice Racer Project (the Snow Girl)
