hey everyone I was hoping someone might have some tips on hill climbing and a safe way to bail if you don't make it and also how to maybe size up a hill to see if it should evev be attempted

Put your torso/chest/belly (depending on how big you are) up between the handlebars and stick to the throttle. The worst thing you can do is back off the throttle and then try and gas it again. That'll flip you, usually. Steady, constant throttle and appropriate body (weight) positioning.

If you gotta bail, get as far away from the bike as possible.

Sizing a hill up: Well, you never know unless you try :naughty: :naughty: Try and see how loose or packed the turf is.

Good luck

The best tip i can give is what i learned from watching us ohio boys last weekend at the valley. Dont try to climb crazy hills by yourself. When guys would try to climb this hill called scarface we had 4 guys spotting the rider. This not only made it safe for the rider but saved some bikes. Except garageboy, his chain came off before he made it far enough to a spotter. So, have help and a tight chain!

Thats for sure.... Like the other guys said. Put your body weight more up front and DON'T let go of the gas. Practice hill climbing on a smaller hill until you think your good enough for a big hill. Then, let her rip!

Some guys on here where talking about laying over the tank and bars with one foot on the rear grab bar and the other on the peg... This puts alot of weight over the front end so it doesn't come up on ya. Also makes it easier to bail if necessary.

I've personally never tried this method. Nor do I think I will. Too many bad experiences with hills I so tend to stay on level ground.

I agree with the level ground idea !! lol...

But when you have to climb the hill to do the trail... Stand on the pegs.. hug the machine with your legs and

above all.

BE in the right gear !!!

Expect to loose speed as you climb, so start with the revs a bit high in a lower gear vs a high gear with not enough revs...

Shifting on a hill is important.. shift quick and don't let the maching slow down too much before you get into the right gear as it could wheelie on you .. so let off the gas.. click.. and get back on it leaning on the bars.

Practice on smaller hills at first and build your way up i guess !

Dont get stuck! If you feel yourself starting to dig in or bog down, try to turn around.. If you have enough room that is :)

You guys are spoiled with all that dune riding. The trails around here are maybe 6 feet across. So if your going up a hill and you get stuck, your kinda screwed. Unless you have front breaks, and arent afraid to go down a hill backwards. I've had some rough experiences with hills. The hills in my woods are really rocky. So it takes a lot of skill to get up them. My friend stalled his blaster right in the middle of the hill with no brakes. I had to get on real fast, start it, then make it the rest of the way. It sure was fun!

when i didient make it up this bigass hill i idmeditaly hit the front breal firt then the back breaks, turn the trike off get off while holding the breaks, hop on the front with ** legs on the pegs while holding onto the bars and breaks, then slowly go straight down. it was hard but fun.

Also watch others hit the hill to see how they do it. When watching them look for ruts or rock/stumps that could try and buck you.

Thats the way I do it and thats how i started hill climbing. depending on how long the hill is just go to the bottom give it a little throttle till you go up it 3 or 4 feet and just kep sizing the hill up like that, then when your confident LET-R-RIP

If i see a really steep narrow hill, i go and walk up it first to check for logs, slippery mud and other stuff. Its a good idea to do it as once i was flying up a hill and kt a log with a wheel and threw me right off balance. If your not gonna make it you CAN use the back brake, just when you use it put it on when your stopped or moving forwards so you dont flip.

IMO if you can climb the rocky Northeast hill climbs then you can climb anything.

rocks? it's a pile of rocks... Lol. the angle of some of them as well as loose gravel is challenge enough.

I know what you speak of though... There are plenty of those rutted up rooted hills around too!

I just searched the local riding forum for a quick pic. that's the hill in shamokin. not too far from me.

I know all the hills around here are all rocky with tree roots. My trails used to be old wagon trails. So some of them are wide and others are only about 6 feet across. Each year it seems like the hills get worse and worse. All this rain and the northeast winters really take a toll on these trails. Maybe I'll go for a walk tomorrow and snap some pictures of the hills. There is one hill I have yet to make a trail going up it. You should see this thing, rock galore and decent size considering I live kinda in the flat lands of Mass.

hey chris thanx for posting a pic of me and 03orange shee, lol and whoever said put your weight over the bars is an idiot, if you put your weight over the front all you do is loose traction, you have to find the happy medium point where you keep the front end down but you still have enough traction. the key to climbing shale and gravle is controled wheel spin. and if you know your not gonna make it, do one of 2 things, either try and turn around, or just let the back tires dig a hole and dependign what kind of quad or trike it is , you may not even have the power to begin to fathom how much power loose hills rob from a machine. and 2 strokes are generaly better hill climbers in loose dirt and stone. and 4 strokes are better for dirt trails and more pack4ed down hills, i am known as the king of coal hill, and one of the only people to ever climb it on a 3 wheeler, another thing is say your climbing on a 350x, use 2nd gear and get your momentum up, and dont be afraid to let the revs build, but if you start loosing momentum drop a gear before you loose all your momentum, keep the revs built, and on loose ground dont be afraid to keep the tires spinning. and shoose the tires for the terain, i use realitors on my 350x for riding in the coal and shale, and for dirt i run razr's. and another little bit of help is slide the tripples down the fork legs an inch or so.and if you dont belive what i have to say, just ask any of the fallowing peoiple, 03 orange shee, louismilike, or anyone can look at bikepics.com and liik up xcracer160 and see all my pics of some of my adventures., my best advice is build your way up and dont get over your head too fast, momentum is #1 in hill climbing of any sort. here are a few examples of the kinds stuff you can expect from me.

:w00t: :Bounce

After looking though bikepics. com I found this. I believe this to be the very same hill I wreck at on occasion  Is that the front of the slatebank in Hazleton? Right next to the poleline on the s. beltway???

If it is the next time your going get in touch with me a couple days before. Pretty much all my weekends are freed up.:w00t:
