i know that kawi made a significant change to the tecate between 85 and 86. but was it to just the frame and suspension, or did they change anything on the motor. reason i ask is i have a friend that has an 86-87 tecate motor sitting in his garage and is willing to sell me it, will it bolt up in an 85 tecate frame? or will i have to do some modifiing to make it fit? i am in the begining stages of restoring an 85, and if the 86 motor is basically the same i want to juice her up and bolt it in to the 85 frame. please any info would be helpful. i know when i am flipping thru some dennis kirk catalogues they list alot of the same parts for the 85 and 86... so i was just wondering how different these 2 motors are. thanks in advance.:Bounce

The motor swap will not work mainly due to the exhaust exit location. On the 84/85 the exhaust exits the cylinder at an angle using a single downtube frame. The 86/87 has a central exit exhaust coming straight out the front passing through a split "Y" downtube frame. I have no idea if the motor mounts line up but I suspect that they will but the frame downtube is the main factor.

What about the '85 cylinder on the '86 bottom end?
Assuming you have an '85 cylinder....

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 85 cylinder will bolt to the 86 bottom-end, but you will lose the power valve. 85s didn't have one.
