I recently bought a used 1983 200 big red engine on E-bay, the seller said that the engine was good but that it had set on his shop floor for aprox. a year.
When I received the engine it came complete but without carb. and exhaust, the sparkplug was in and tight.
My question is, when I pulled the pullstart to check the compression, it pulled much to easy as far as I was concerned.
I E-mailed the owner and he insists the engine is good.
Is it normal for the compression to be low after sitting for a while or am I going to install a dud in my bike ?

thanks, Hans.

I'm not sure but I think the big red had a decompressor lever for easier starting.

You might have a point there, thanks.

The Motor has a Decompression lever on the right side near the top of the cylinder. I doubt it is on, however, it is worth checking.

Is the motor full of oil? Check the cylinder walls too, if they are really dry that could make a differance as well.

the decompression lever has to flipped everytime you pull the rope. it would have to be stuck in postion to not "ever" build up compression.

yea on my old 1983 200e bigred engine the lever had to be flipped everytime but when i first recived the bike it would run wheather the lever was up or not so id pull out the decompression valve and see if its not worn.(however it wasnt all that hard to pull after a rebuild anyway so .... goodluck

When I bought my 185s I had been setting for a year or so and I had to get the compression up by squirting oil down the cylinder. Once I squirted the oil in it ang rolled it over a bit and let it sit a while I got it running. Try squirting some oil down it, your compression will probably go up. :)
