OK, on my right foot peg one of the bolts snapped off, then the easy out snapped inside it,,, so I am gonna have to heli-coil it,,,, Could someone please tell me the size of the threads,,,, Thanks........... OK,, I got one of them heli-ciled fine,,,, th other one ( upper) the one that had the easy out in it is now all messed up,,,,, the easy out that was in there was impossible to drill through so I had to use a little grinder on my dremel to grind into the bolt,,,, in the proscess I madethe hole larger than the drill needed for the heli coil,,,,, I have a mig welder, but am not to good at welding,, can I fill the hole and start fresh,,,,, What can I do,,, I dont want to have to replace my frame because of a footpeg mount,,,,,, Please help

all my book says is
footpeg mounting bolt - 10mm ( torque to 29-36ft.-lb.)
that is the size of the bolt it'self, not the head wich i think takes a 12mm wrench. can't tell you the pitch or thread per inch either.

those e-z outs are the worst thing ! after breaking one off in a exhaust stud on a x head and hafting to have it milled down,,, i threw out the rest of those worthless p.o.s.
if i gotta drill it out to put a e-z out in,,, i'll just keep drilling and re-tap to thread size i want.

hope this helps ya,,,, john

all of you do this now! buy some left hand spiral drill bits. since I started using them, I have never had a problem getting screws or bolts out and not damaging the internal threads in any way. believe me, they prevent a hack job and are super easy to use. go to any Industrial supply and buy a set.

Since I just put in all new hardware on my X, I know this answer. It is a 10mm x 25mm x 1.25pitch on top, and 10mm x 50mm x 1.25pitch on bottom. The lower bolt on mine is 40mm long, but it's an '85, and they changed that bolt size in '86.

Thanks,,,, I just got my heli-coil kit... they did not have the 1.25 pitch, I had to get 10x1.50,,,, Oh well at least its metric, I just want to get my peg back on,,,, its a great day to ride we jus got 2 feet of snow,,,,,

So lefthanded spiral drill bits won't break as easy as an easy out?

Left hand drill bits, are just drill bits designed to spin the other way,,,,,, I wish I had a set of them, it would have aved me a lot of agrivation, I am deffinantly invsting in a set soon,,,,,,,

If you have a little bit of bolt hanging put just weld a nut to the end and you can wrench it out, otherwise just heat it and use a left hand drill, and it should come out, of it doesnt make sure the drill is the size of the heli-coil and you cant lose!

Can someone explain how a reverse thread drill bit would take out a bolt easier than a easy out?

Believe it or not, most snapped off screw due to stress or overtightening will actually back right out if you can slot it or hit the outerside of the bolt with a sharpened punch in the loosening direction. Not the rusted ones though. What happens is the drill tries to cut in the opposite or the loosening direction and sometimes it will just back right out. Rather than tightening it in even further. Easy outs suck period, although the solid steel square types work better than the spiral crappers. Heat almost ALWAYS works - cherry red. But if you ever drill anything important in your life do this - Use a sharp punch and deeply find the center, now look at it is it in the center? Just reangle the punch in the hole you just made and drive it to the very center. Use a small SHARP drill, oil and alot of patience and watch it for side to side while a bud tells you up or down. Drill most of the bolt out. Use tool above and heat if necessary. The hole being in the center is the most important!
