Theres been a bunch of 82 R's in my local wantad. Cheap too. I'm talking 600 for an all original R. Can anyone tell me what these are like? Suspension wise, hows the power, is it good for trails? Thanks.

Afraid not mate,
No R had elec start-kick only
None had reverse-your feet do this job
And the tripmeter was not standard equipment

I had an 82R that was totally awesome in the trails. as for power, real smooth and predictible, suspension not the best by todays standards or even the 85-86R standards but it is good enough for moderate trail riding. the set up that I used was it had a stock pipe with an aftermarket silencer, stock gearing, 20" tires. the engine had a .50 over piston in but beyond that it was really not modified except for a K&N filter. with this set up with the 20" tires and the stock gearing it was not that fast on top end but it was real billy goatish in the trails, motor would spin quick rocketing up hills or flyin outta corners which is what you want in a good trail bike.

Thanks for the response atcwrench. The thing i was worried about mostly was the suspension. Seeing that its a 82. How much suspension clearance is there? Some of my trails are kinda rocky. I don't want to bouncing all over the place. Do you think its possible to bolt up 85-86 R forks and rear suspension? Thanks.

negative on the suspension swap, the 85 middle triple tree tube is too long for the 81-82R frame tube, the rear suspension on an 81-82R is a linkless design as the 83-86R have a link suspension set up. if your terrrain is kinda rocky go back with a set of 22" tires which is stock and change the front sprocket from a 13 tooth(stock) to a 12 tooth. this will shorten your gearing and make it feel like it has more grunt than it really has.
to help the suspension out rebuild to forks if they need it and put in thicker fork oil from belray and install progressive rate springs, rear suspension, if the shock still has a good charge on it and still has oil in it, install a progressive rate spring as well. the suspension will feel kind soft on the real short travel but as it starts to go up in travel the spring stiffens up and works like a cheap link set up.
you can get the springs at www.bikebandit.com at a reasonable price

they kinda handle like a lighter more powered 250sx, a lil bouncy but not a bad ri=de for its age, better than a non suspended model.

I'm thinking about getting one of the air-cooled ATC250R's too... It's a 1982 I think. Where the hell are you, to get an OEM 250R for 600??

Massachusetts. This is the second all original one ive seen in the last 2 weeks going for $600. I definatly got the desire to ride. Been riding for 10 years and still going strong. I just need a trike :TrikesOwn

Think you got a 250R mixed up with a 250SX/ES
On the contrary, back in "the day", Goki made an electric start kit for the 250R and the Odyssey. I can scan the pic form an old Dirt Wheelse/#wheeling if any of you are truely intersted...
I have 2 - 250R's.... The first 82R I got for $650 and it came with a bunch of spare parts.
The second 82R was complete, but the motor bottom is set up and the top end was apart for many years. It's the one Kintore picked up and delivered to me at trikefest. Paid a whopping $250 for the complete trike WITH the Hondaline Fairing, custom "old school ice racing" front tire adaptor plat, drilled fender, safety seat, and fresh tires all around. It came with a spare 38mm carb I sold to Dale, some NOS parts, etc. The rike had been parked in a nice garage since 1988... mint original condition on all the nuts and bolts and such! Just need to fix the cracked case on my 300R motor and toss it in!
I LOVE my 82R.... Kinda like riding a 110 on crack!

Damn, you really should drop the 600 and get one, then. Or even better, get 2. Or 3.
Or 4

ive ridden an 82 250r and my 84, their both a blast to ride. the 82 was a blast because the wheelbase was relatively short, and the thing wouldent stop wheelieing. the suspention was good, ive never ridden a bike with amazing suspention for more than 30 mins, and the 82 gave me nothing to complain about. im glad i bought the 84 for 600, but the 82's nastalgic look and hard pulling motor make it a blast to ride.
