anyone have any ideas?

It depends on the Make / model of the machine. If you think it's going bad, get the testing spec's for that machine and break out a ohm meter. ;)

Yep, test for open windings, the resistance of the lights winding should be very low, may be low enough that a cheap ohmmeter cant read it properly. IT might short due to vibration and the lights might go dim or out.

Whats ohms supposed to be?

I might have specs on your trike but I don't know for sure wich one you are asking about ,,,

it's an electrical measurement, it's something like how much power your getting, and you measure it in ohm's, thats just what is called.... I dont really know the technical way to explain it.

crap. forgot. It's an 1983 185s.
was riding last night and front and tail light was going dim while cruising and coming back on bright, then going off and on.
I need to check the connections.

Ground wire(s) ,,, thats my guesse.

Good luck ,,, my 185 book is out on loan at the moment .

Ohm's is the measure of electrical resistance which comes from the relation of the proportionality of voltage and current. When measuring electrical resistance the unit's for the measurment are called "Ohm's" named after Georg Simon Ohm who dicovered.....(no brainer) Ohm's law. Sorry for being so informative, I'm an electrical engineering student, knowledge never hurts. Isn't that why we ask questions on these forums?

DANG! Someones on the ball, good job and exactly correct.

When measuring resistance, be sure the circuit is totally dead (no power), and know the ohmmeter doesnt have polarity (red or black, + or -). And DONT crank the engine with the meter connected to the stator.

Ohm is where electricity lives! Yuk Yuk Yuk :D

Blinking off and on does not sound like a stator, that should either be good or not. Fire it up with lights on and go wiggling the wires. Vibration plays heck with them.

Could it be a voltage regulator...? I think your bike has one.
