I had my motion sensor go off twice tonight so I went out to look and my Big Red and 200x are covered with one tarp then the YTM 200 and the other 200x is covered in another about 10 feet away. I hold them down with heavy duty bungee cords and the 200x was totally uncovered. I was freaking out. My yard is enclosed mostly by a fence but there is a few spots were there is a few trees seperating the lawns of neighbors that someone could easily push it through. It is a good thing that I removed my cdi's during the night. I called the cops and they came over to scope of the situation and the officer could clearly see the route that would have been trike thief had taken. Does anyone have any good ideas of how to secure trikes better. I think I'm going to wrap a thick chain through all of the frames and then to the axle on my van. Any better idead would be sweet. Man I wish I caught the bleep bleep bleep that tried to steal my rig. Time to invest in a handgun???

Man, it's a shame you have to leave them outside. If it was me I'd go to the trouble of finding garage space to rent for the sake of keeping them out of the weather and theft. Maybe you don't have that option though?
Any garages, barns, etc near by that you could inquire about?
You could always build a "shed" just high enough to roll them all in (shouldn't cost too much) and then install alarm on door.
Actually that's what I should do because my 3 wheelers have taken up the whole one 1/2 of the garage! A few sheets of plywood, bunch of 2X4's, couple hinges, bag of nails and you got a shed! Hmmmmm ?
Place them near the motion light sensor more. This should keep them away.Buy the way put a plexy cage around the lights. They my try to shot them out with a pellet gun.Hope this will help.Put the chian into the frames to as you said.

Run a chain through the frames, and put a motion detector light near them as stated. Handgun????? Definitly not the answer. the bads outweigh the goods on that one. NO trike is worth someones life or major injury. Besides, even if you chain it, put a light on it, build a shed etc.... IF they really want it bad enough they will get it regardless....sorry to say. Just incorporate as many deterants as you can and hope for the best.

I'd freak if they were gone. I think I'm going to rent a storage unit near one of my riding spots. For now there are locked to my fence and to the front axle on my van and I have the van parked so close to the trikes that someone would have to pickup the whole trike up to move it. The cop that came by said that they had 10 cars come up missing in the past week near where I live. I wish I could keep them indoors badly cause the winters are really ruff up here and now this crap. I've been paying close attention to people acting strange and I had a gut feeling someone was going to try this. I go outside about 3 times a night to check on them now and I'm glad I went out lastnight. My buddy had a brand new sled stolen from him 3 years ago and he doesn't live more than 3 blocks away.

I know what you mean. My dad NEVER locked our garage door (where we keep probably $100,000 worth of tools and carpentry equipment and our 3 wheelers), until he started getting suspicious that someone might go in there. So he started locking it about a month ago, and we went out last Friday and someone had tried to get in. They had actually turned the door knob so hard in their effort to get in that it broke the lock. Thank god for deadbolts!! I would have **** myself if I would have went out and my SX had been gone.
Dammit!

I keep my trikes chained together despite being in a locked garage. You can never be too careful.
Building a nice big shed is a good idea but keep locking them together even if you do.

Does anyone have any good ideas of how to secure trikes better.
Yeah (evil laugh) its called "high voltage." Get one of those ignition transformer units for a forced air kerosene heater (or a fuel oil furnace) and connect that to the handlebars. If anyone touches it, their screams will wake you up. Garon - teed. 15,000 volts at 1/2 amp will knock the living *-no-wut out of them :naughty: The burn marks it leaves on their hands will help the Cods to identify them.
Let the air out of the tires, makes them a blank to move and doesnt take long to pump em back up. A dead ignition makes them hard to ride away.
For something to anchor a chain to outdoors, pour a concrete pillar in the ground under where they are parked and set a big steel loop in the concrete. Then connect it to the high voltage LOL
The high voltage will stop neighborhood dogs from p-ing on your car wheels too. :naughty:
If you dont have a dog, try a goose, they make excellent night watchmen, slightest intrusion and they go off!

You could always remove a rear wheel off each of your trikes, it makes them inconvenient to roll away and any inconvienience works in your favor.

If you've got some extra money laying around (don't we all?) you can build a decent shed for $500. I had to rebuild our shed last year and that's about what the materials cost me, which included all the plywood for flooring, siding and roofing, pressure treated 2x4 floor joists (sits right on the ground), and 30 year shingles. THe only thing I didn't replace was the 2x4 structure, but even that wouldn't cost much more because it's built with 4' centers so there's only about another $50 in 2x4s.
I fit my motocross bike, my pit bike, 2 bicycles, my 200s and a full length countertop workbench, and toolchest etc. in there and there's still room for some more toys. I'm guessing without the workbench and tool chest you could easily fit 3-4 trikes. I keep the door locked with a padlock and a motion light directed right on it. I've also got an alarm system I'm thinking about installing...it's just siren but goes off when the door is opened.
Or take a look at sheds at Lowes and Home Depot. The construction isn't that great but they should last several years and you could probably get something to fit everything you've got for relatively cheap.

If you put a bungee cord around the front of the frame and had it hooked to an alarm (so that when the trike moved away from the house the cord would pull a switch so the alarm circut could go on.) This would require a $5 walmart 12volt horn, a on off switch, and a bungee cord. Simply weld a piece of metal to the top of the switch and bend it over so when the cord is pulled is doesnt slip over the switch lever. Thats what I'd do and only costs about $10 if you already have the battery.

All i did was chain them up to my house, sure bolt cutters, but thats one stop harder to stealing them, thicker the chain the better, if the cutters wont fit the chaim wo'la just make sure you get a real lock, non of thet made in china crap
That reminds me, a guy i know didnt want his harly stolen, so low and behold, a christmas tree. they make great conversation pices and if they are inside your house..... noone can steal them.

After my ATC 110 got stolen, I started running a chain between the frame, fork and rear axle. Nobody touched it after that. :D What you can also do, if your 200X has a rear disc, is put a long-hasp padlock through one of the vent holes in the disc. That way, if they try to roll it/drive it away, they'll get about a foot and then the rear tires will lock up!

Rig a trip wire on the tarp to a recording of machine gun fire comming from your window.. will wake you up.. and scare the living hell out of them.
A clothes pin with 2 metal contacts and a wooden dowl make a good trip mechanism

I got my Trikes on Video 24 hrs a day in case someone does steal them. I got one Locked up one in the front porch and one in the overhang. All under Motion sensor lights. Its funny you mention about looking out there a few times a night, as I do the same. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and I get worried and take a look. I guess I figure as soon as someone sees my Tecate its going to get stollen, so I dont leave it out when im not riding it. I dont want anyone seeing it at my house. I got guns and they arent the answer but I would have mine in my hand if I busted someone trying to steal mine. I dont want to get shot and a 12 gauge blast or a few rounds from the pistol will scare anyone away. Thats only for last resort and I hope to never have to hold a gun on someone. But I Will

Booby traps are great as long as you don't kids of your own that might get caught by them......
Lots of ways to go about this. the camera thing is ok.. but hoods and gloves don't help. I'd rather prevent than cure.

I would purchase a cheap .410 or 20ga shotgun (or borrow one from a close friend or family member) and keep it near the door leading out to the trikes. When you are not home, hide/lock it away. Use bird shot or buck shot.
The sound of a pump action will make most burglers stop in their tracks. If they try to run away, shoot them in the legs, or at least shoot into the ground behind them. This will let them know that you do mean business.
The chain idea is great, along with the disk lock that goes through the rotor. Keep motion sensor lights on them at all times. Also, signs that say 'protected by shotgun' or anything along those lines will get the potential burglar thinking twice.

ok get a piece of 1 inch rebar and bend a loop on each end, and in vest in pryptonite locks, and run the rebar trought the frames and get the massive krptonite cable locks the one that the company will replace anything stolen if the lock gets broken its like 89 bux a piece but well worth it. and just cable both ends of the rebar to something solid that way the only way to get them out is to cut the frames!!!!!!!!

haha i might be the most redneck one here, but what the heck. i protect my trike with 2 german shepards (great pets, even better security dog) that youd have to be insane to even get in my backyard. also heres my cheap and great portable alarm for my atc  .
go to walgreens or walmart, anywhere basicaly, and buy a window alarm thing for 6$. the kind that scream when the magnetic peice or a cord gets pulled out or away from it.
http://firsthomesecurity.com/homeprotection/homesecuritystore_1774_814361.jpg
use 3m adhesive to put the magnet on the inside of your fork closest to the tank when the bars are turned all the way, and use 3m adhesive to put the sensor unit under the tank or anywhere close to the magnet. tilt the bars to the side so that the magnet and alarm are touching. arm the sensor and your ready to go. as soon as the bars move, the thing screams like a atc500r. any burglar who tries to turn the wheel or even touches it, has the whole neighborhood awake.
plus, a smith and wesson 9mm doesnt hurt either. ive only target shot mine, but if the need arises it would be ready, though it is locked away. if you have any firearm and dont want the responsibility of a loaded gun, then go to a gun show, and pick up a box of blanks. ive seen them fairly cheap, for every thing from .22lr to a .357 and everything in between. check your local laws though[/*]. a burgaler cant tell the difference between blanks and real ammo, so just pop off some rounds to scare em.

That alarm thing on the steering is a great idea.. by the time they find it and destroy it half the neighborhood would be awake !!

haha thanks, i thought of it after trying to think of a cheap way to protect my 250r when i park it in the woods, since theirs no key  .
and as soon as anyone even touches the bars, the noise (120db's on mine) would scare them so bad that they would be gone before you could get outside. no robber wants to even be seen in the act, so when it goes off, their gone.

Like trackburger says a trike isn't worth a persons life, however I think it should be open season on any thief!

I agree I would also have to take a shot. I wouldn't be looking for a head shot but one that would put the thief down for a few. I've got a good plan I'm going to sleep in my van in the back where the windows are tinted with a heavy prybar and a little c02 bb pistol from when I was a kid and wait and see what happens. These trikes are a very large part of my life and for someone to try and take this from me will make me do stupid stuff. I must go out 3-4 times a night to check on them cause it is bad around here near the gut of Rutland. I need to build a shed or do as meatbox said and run a cam on them all day and night. I just went out and bought a brinks 40.00 chain with lock that is very heavy and would be hard to cut. One of my other problems is my neighbors don't like my trikes so it would be a blessing for them to get robbed from me. I guess it is just me and my wife to keep track on the trikes. She is the one who told me that the motion sensor had gone off. I've poured so much $$$ and time and hard work into these to loose them would be unbelieveable.

it would be a great time to look into a guard dog,.... with hundreds of dogs being uthanized in america due to no space to put them, theres no better time to go to the pound and rescue mans best friend!
oh and if these guys are gutsy enough to go try to steal it again, then they definately mean buisness. i wouldent be surprised if it was 2 or 3 guys, armed, that usually scope out the neighborhood during the day for stuff to steal. i wouldent hesitate to shoot a leg if someone was foolin around on my property with my trikes.

the thing is with regular chains is you can go to Princess Auto and buy big bolt cutters for $15 (check this week's flyer). I am thinking of getting 1/2 inch aircraft cable right now, I dont think the average bolt cutter could get that cut.

My wife would not let me have a dog. I wanted to get a pitbull for the longest time but can't. I think I will try an alarm and see how that works. I use to have one that you would hang from a doorknob and it could pickup the small amount of electricity in a human body and would go off very loud. I'm going to radioshack and will rig something up. Thanks for the input though I would have never thought of doing stuff like this without you guys. Thanks

Most of the thiefs around here are not to bright so I think I will be ok for a bit. I parked my van right tight to the trikes again so the trike thief would have to knock the fence over to beable to move it. The locking cable is 5/8" thick and the most secure they sold. I'm going to get another cable to run to a hook that I'm going to put into the foundation sometime this week. A 1inch hammer drill should make easy work of the hole being punched into the concrete. I've gotta run out and do another check up on the trikes again and head to bed. Thanks for the ideas. :TrikesOwn
