Are they the same. i sure hope because me and my friend just ordered one for his 85, but it says 86. i looked all over the internet for one that said 85. i always thought they were the same bike from 85 to 86. i think the 86 had a 1 degree more rake. Is it the same?

No.The 85/86 250R cdi are not the same.

Any idea whats different about them? id guess if the wiring is the same for both years it might work, but I suppose they could be different. For what they cost, might be worth while to find a workaround. :wondering

As I said in the first post, No, it will not work. As you can see (in the pic) they are not even close. I dont see how you could modify it to make it work.

Right, it wont plug in, but...

If one was in a pinch, one could solder wires to the terminals, assuming the connections to the harness were the same. They are an absolute PIG (putting it nicely, Ive been soldering 30+ years and they make me want to thrown tools) to solder, but if it comes down to more time than money, time wins! Thats part of what I do when I rework an ignition system.

Check the wiring diagram, if the external connections are the same, then it may work. Not guranteed, but possible.

If anyone can send me an '85 diagram, I can check it out. might just discover something :wondering

ok could i buy an 86 trx250r wire harness and make it work. i'm sure the cdi's are the same as the 86 atc and trx.

I'm almost positive the cdi's are the same but lets see if someone else will back me up on that before you purchase one.

Just look one up on ebay and it does look the same. There is one up for auction right now, bidding is at 9.95 the pic of it wont tell you anything tho but there were a few others and they looked identical.

i've already ordered the cdi. what i'm asking is would it work if i upgraded my 85 to an 86 trx wire harness.

that would allow the CDI to plug in, but then it raises other questionss as to the other things plugging in. Can you get an 85 wiring diagram?

If its just a matter of ignition wiring, I can make an ignition harness and solder it to the new CDi, thats much easier and cheaper than a new factory harness.

According to the wiring diagrams of '85 and '86, the CDI should work, if it can be connected to the wiring (by either soldering it to the 85 harness or swapping the 86) with the following exceptions:

1.) The stator ignition pulse winding and pulse generator coil on the '85 are the same as the '86. They probably are, Id check a picture of both and see if they look the same. This is an electrical concern, not mechanical. Comparing the resistances of the stators ignition winding and pulse generator coil will give a fair idea if they are the same from both years.

2.) The pulse generator is wired the same polarity. Get it backwards, and strange and wonderful things will go wrong. Again, I dont know why theyd change it from year to year, that wastes expensive design time.

3.) The wire colors from 85 to 86 are slightly different, but go to the same places.

The bigger question, if swapping the 86 harness in, is whether the other things will connect, mainly the handlebar circuits. I cant tell that from the wiring diagrams, thats a matter of physical layout.
