ok...i picked up another 70 today down in houston....got it back home and started messing with it........it would crank up and run at idle for a few seconds, then die...or if you tried to give it ANY gas at all it would die...tried push starting it and it acted like it was backfiring thru the carb......any ideas? :wondering

A backfire thru the carb would either be timing problem or valve adjustment needed... i think.

Check the gas flow from the petcock, the vent cap on the gas tank, the air filter . put in new plug... you know the usual.. fresh gas.. empty the carb by the bowl drain and let it refill with fresh gas..

try again !

or possibly a bent intake valve.

Could be timing, leaky intake valve, but before going that far, check the points. It sounds like they may be adjusted too close. If they are, set them at .015 of an inch and try it again.

Clean the carb

install an inline fuel filter

check the tank for rust, these bikes are notorious for rust in the tank.

If the tank is rusted bad take it to a radiator shop and have them Kreem it or red kote it , or buy a plastic tank for it.
