I searched and found a person who said they were but I just want to confirm that is correct. I know the 85s wont, but I want to make sure the 86s do.

To the best of my knowledge, the 86 ATC250R rear end will bolt right on to a TRX250R and vice versa.

Different brake hub/bearings/carrier or a combination of it? I'd be interested in knowing how you did that.

I have a 400EX axle and carrier in mine, with the 250R brake hub. Haven't had any trouble with it and everything seems to work fine. The 250R sprocket even fits on the 400EX hub with a little persuasion. 400EX axle is shorter but the hubs are deep dish, so the length ends up the same.
To the best of my knowlege, the '86 and up trx 250R axle is interchangeable with the '86 ATC 250R axle. Seems to be the general consensus that the '85 R axle is different, but the difference must be very slight. It's hard to tell with the '85 and '86 axles side by side.

So the 400ex axle interchanges if you use the carrier also? Thats super good news. That means I can use one of those cheapo G-Force extended axles out of rocky mountain for $200 if I decide to take the plunge and do what I'm thinkin about. Thanks grundlegrabber.

An 86 axle will fit a 85, but an 85 axle will not fit a 86 without hitting the fat adjustment side of the carrier. The sprocket hub is different on an 85. The 85 sprocket bolts on the right side of the hub & all others including the 400ex bolt on the left side of the sprocket hub. When you put the 86 axle in the 85 carrier there is a big gap where the carrier adjustment is. I just put my TRX +4 axle in my 85-r to run on the oval at sunset. I did grind the adjuster side of a 86 carrier once to make an 85 axle fit. The brake rotor & hubs are the same, but the calipar bracket/ holder are different from 85-86. All the bearings & seals are the same. They just changed to the bigger outer diameter of the carrier for 86 & up.

I think you are right. I recently put a YRX axle in my 85 R with no problems. You put the sprocket to the outside on the newer axles.

I Swapped An 02400ex And An 86 250r Carrier And Axle. Worked Fine. You Will Also Need The Axle Nut Assm.
