Hey all,
Well I just got my "new" front brakes on my 83 R. I left my Clymer at my cousins house so I dont know how to add the fluid. I have never done this so I am a newbie to this. There is no fluid what so ever in them.
Can someone please tell me the steps on how to fill them so I can finally ride her and get it jetted
Any help and or tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance

Fill up the resovoiur (sp.?) and open the banjo bolt at the caliper to bleed out the air in the line ( be sure to keep brake fluid in the resovoiur at ALL times).
Once you are sure the line is full of brake fluid tighten the banjo bolt back onto the caliper.
using the small 8mm bleeder valve, put a little pressure on the brake lever and open the bleeder valve a little ( it don't take but a quarter turn to open enough to bleed the air out and dress the brake lever slow and steady
once the brake lever is fully depressed ,,,, keep it in that posistion and snug the bleeder screw back down. Then you can let up on the brake lever and
repeat again + again. As you get closer to getting all the air bled out of the system more fluid then air will spurt out.
dot4 brake fluid is prefered by most of us for our atc brakes

a question, what is the the banjo bolt. i have bled my brakes before but I only opend the brake bleed nipple and squeezed the lever and had the fluid come out till the brake lever was pretty hard, am i doing it wrong?

The bolt that holds the brake line in place is called the banjo bolt. It's the ones that have the hole in them and uses the copper sealing washers.
Or at least that is what I heard it called along time ago and it stuck in my head :)
I just let brake fluid trickle into the brake line to help remove air quicker.
No your way is just fine firefire ,,,,

Yes, DOT 4. Replacement for DOT 3 but not the other way around.

OH,
ok. So if I understand this: I can use 3 or 4 on my R. Either way will work?
Why is 4 preferred over 3 if 3 is reccomended?

4 is the upgraded or replacement version of 3. 4 was developed after your trike was built.

With a completely empty system it might be better to use a large syringe and a piece of tubing to fill it from the bottom up through the bleed screw. That way, the air would be pushed up and out, the way it wants to go.
