I finally got this whole SX project done, and I figured I would share this with you. I have been keeping it in a document in Word for when I got done to share with you guys. Here goes.
SX-Project:
Before:

Rear-end:
Seat:
I can’t STAND when things have torn seats. I feel that it makes the whole machine look so dirty, old, and used. So when I got this, that was the #1 priority. I picked up some ¼ inch staples, some fabric, and went to town. It took 3 hours to do this seat, but that was because I wanted it perfect. No wrinkles. It wasn’t very expensive either. $10 dollars for the staples and a yard of the fabric. And a yard of fabric is enough to do 2 seats. So I must say, for $10 dollars, you can make your ripped seat look $100 dollars better.
Here is the only picture I have that shows part of the tears:

Shock:
I always thought the shock on the back of the bike looked horrible. I’ve wanted to fix it up ever since I got the bike. It wasn’t until I read a post where Huffa said how to take it apart and paint it up that I did it.
Here are some pics of the progress of the shock:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2787-402199.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2787-402199.jpg/view/)

http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2818-704511.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2818-704511.jpg/view/)
Here it is done:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/Dscn2823 1.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/Dscn2823 1.jpg/view/)
And here it is on the bike:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2918-47681.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2918-47681.jpg/view/)
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2917-500496.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2917-500496.jpg/view/)
I think it made the backend look a lot better, although I didn’t really like the silver shock on the back of the bike with everything else being black. It wasn’t until I got all of the polished aluminum and gray things on the back of the bike that I started liking it. It blended in.

Wheels:
Ever since I got this bike, I’ve wanted to paint the wheels. I hated the rust around the edges of the rims. Then Huffa told me how to paint them.. in the same post that he said about painting the shock. As soon as I got the paint, I got right to it. At first, I had some difficulties. I picked up some paint from a buddy, and ran out. The 2nd rear wheel only needed one more coat when I ran out. And it just so happened that the color was discontinued!!! So I had to strip both tires back down and restart. I wasn’t happy.
This is what the tire looked like before:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2825.JPG (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2825.JPG/view/)
The first color:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2915-465348.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2915-465348.jpg/view/)
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2938-718222.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2938-718222.jpg/view/)
And here is what they look like now:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/RWheel-322778.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/RWheel-322778.jpg/view/)
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/Rwheels (1).JPG (http://www.supload.com/free/Rwheels (1).JPG/view/)
I matched up the colors of the caps, and they were pretty close. But when I got to spraying, I saw a huge difference. NEVER believe the cap color!! It can be way off. I personally liked the first color better, but oh well. Now I’m just going to wait until the paint chips, and then have the rims powdercoated and done the right way.
Then I didn’t like the “drity” look of the old lug nuts on the nice, newly painted wheels. So I got some chrome lug nuts for it. I like them a lot and they also add to the chrome/polished aluminum stuff on the bike.

Exhaust:
This exhaust annoyed me from day one, but I’ve loved the sound from day one as well. I didn’t have money to get another one (or so I thought!), so I just dealt with it, and warpped it in tin to make it look better, and cover up all the rust-holes in it.
Here she is when I first got the bike:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2221-978018.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2221-978018.jpg/view/)
Here it is after the tin:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2917-939560.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2917-939560.jpg/view/)
I still thought it looked like crap! So when Huffa showed me an auction of a used SuperTrapp, I jumped on it. For a winning bid of $26, I made out!! (It was only $41 with shipping). It looked like CRAP when I first got it, but after about 2-3 hours of polishing and painting, it looks 110% better. I can definitely say it was worth buying a used SuperTrapp and fixing it up for $41, than buying a brand new Cobra and slapping it on the bike for over $200. Just knowing that you took it from looking like it was beat to heck and back and then making it look like new gives you a great feeling. Better than just buying a new one and slapping it on the bike! Here is the SuperTrapp before:

And after polishing and stuff:

And then after paint:

http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/MVC-041S-144731.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/MVC-041S-144731.jpg/view/)
I love this SuperTrapp and the sound is awesome with 12 discs. Sounds like a Harley on a slightly smaller scale, really. I can tell that I lost a tiny bit of horsepower, because it will only pull the front end up in first now, instead of first and second, but the speed gains are great. I would recommend a SuperTrapp to anyone that can get their hands on one.

Grab bar:
These PRM grab bars are not too cheap. But they aren’t expensive either. Just the right price for the quality. I’d have to say it was quite a good investment. Compared to the stock one, it feels soo much more durable, and it is also lighter. I love the look of it on the bike too. The stock one was just too.. blah. This one seems to give it a “sportier” look, and also offers a little bit of room incase you want to strap a gas tank on there or something. There isn’t a TON of room, but enough for a one-gallon gas tank or something to fit if you strap it down well, which is more than the stock grabbar offered.
Here she is before the grabbar:

Taillight:
The taillight may seem minor...but on this bike it was a big improvement. It brought the look of the whole backend together. The old taillight was cracked and dirty:
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2221-192103.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2221-192103.jpg/view/)
http://www.supload.com/thumbs/default/DSCN2916-176078.jpg (http://www.supload.com/free/DSCN2916-176078.jpg/view/)
and this new aluminum LED taillight that I got off of eBay (it was for a Banshee) works great. It cuts through the night great. It doesn’t cast that red light behind you like the stock taillight (I hated that red light it cast…I don’t know why… it just bugged me), but it cuts through the nighttime 10x better. I personally love this taillight and am glad I invested in it. It fits in with all of the other aluminum/chrome looking things on the rear of the bike. I had to drill and tap holes in the bottom of the grabbar to mount it, but that was no problem. Considering that was the first time I had ever used a tap set, I’d have to say I did pretty good and was veryyyy proud of myself. lol
Here is the rear before the taillight:

Front-end:
Forks and brake drum: (I replaced the torn boot on the left side as well…but thats nothing significant)
Now these…boy… these took awhile. 3 or more hours per fork, but I can say it was worth it. The forks/brake drum alone made the front end of the bike look a lot better. I don’t have much to say about the forks, other than do not try to polish your forks/brake drum unless you have a lot of patience and time on your hands. It took 2 days to get these done, and probably around 7-8 hours total for the forks and what you see in the after pics:
Before..: (it was half cleaned up in the first pic.. and I already had the right fork done in the rest)

Headlight:
I’ve always looooved the look of the 350X headlight, and I’ve always envied the people that had them on their bikes because I thought they looked so great. Well they not only look great, they are so much better than the 250SX headlight. I had some trouble with the wiring, as the people who helped in my post know… but we got through it thanks to their help and advice. Now I must say. The 250SX headlight works pretty well. But after putting this 350X headlight on there, I am never changing it back. It looks great, and is a lot brighter than the 250SX headlight. The dual beam thing is awesome and makes it so much brighter, gives it a wider viewing path, and about a 2-3x longer range. Comparing the 250SX headlight to the 350X headlight is like trying to compare a household lamp to a spotlight.

I have to thank TravEX for the headlight… and a BIG thanks goes out to 350x’inNY (Bruce) for sending me a replacement lens and bulb to replace the broken one. And he also sent it to me for free until I get the money to pay him back. Thanks Bruce! And just so you know, I’ll have your money to you soon :)
Panel Cover:
This was just a minor detail, but being a perfectionist, it bugged the crap out of me. I need to thank freewheel3 for taking this off his parts bike and sending it to me for free.

Gas Tank:
Now the gas tank was supposed to be the first priority on this bike, but it got set aside sometime during the project and forgot for awhile. As soon as my dad remembered that my neighbor is a painter and told me about it, I ran over there to ask him if he would do it. He jumped on it, as he used to work in a body shop where he would do painting everyday, but hasn’t painted in about a year and is trying to get some practice because he is trying to get back into it. I went to NAPA and bought the paint and all the supplies for $80.00!!!! Oh well. As long as it turned out nice, I thought. And it did. The paint job, along with the decals from Harlan made it look brand new. The tank took about 2 hours of wet sanding from me, and about an hour of wet sanding from Kaz, and probly an hour or two for painting. When all was said and done, he put 9-10 coats on it.. so I don’t have to worry about my knees rubbing the paint down to bare metal anytime soon!!
Here are a few pics of the progress of the tank:
After wet sanding:

I think it turned out very nice, but at a very high price. $138 total, but if I hadn’t already had the Wet/Dry sanding paper and rubbing compound, it would have been more like $170.

Handle Bars:
I don’t have any before/after pics of this part of it. It was a very minor thing. But it was part of the project, so I included it in here. I painted the handle bars, and everything metal on them. Like the throttle housing (or whatever its called), and such.
Front Fender:
Thanks to the post by CHAINSAW, and some advice on flame-kissing from bigredhead.. I got this front fender restored and looking like new. Unfortunately, no before or after pics. But considering that it took over 4 hours to do, I figured I would add it in to the list.
Painted Items:
I have no before or after pictures of this either, but you can see them in the before and after pics of the SX. I painted the kicker, foot pegs, shift lever, foot brake, hubs, heat shield, header, and more. Too much to mention, and not really anything significant. Just minor details.
I probably missed some stuff… but hey…there was a long list of To-Do’s on this project.
Here is the list of things that I wanted for the project and got:
PRM Grabbar
LED Billet Aluminum Taillight
SuperTrapp Exhaust
Paint Gas Tank
Redo Seat
New Rubber Cover by Neutral Light
Paint Handle Bars and All Metal Acc. On Handlebars
Replace Left Fork Boot
Polish Forks
Paint Rims And Hubs
Paint Front and Rear Brake Drums
Polish Front Brake Drum Backing and Axle
Polish Honda Sign On Clutch Case
Paint Kicker, Exhaust Heat Sheild, Footpegs, Foot Brake, and Shift Lever
Paint Shock
Chrome Lug Nuts
350X Headlight
And here is what I still need to get:
New Front Brakes
K&N Air Filter
New Grips
Paint Frame
New plastics

In the after pictures, I hadn’t washed the bike yet. I’ve been too busy riding it. After spending 4 months and over 70 hours on it, I just want to ride instead of washing it. So I will hopefully get it washed next week and put up some pics for you guys of it clean. For now, bear with the dirty pics.. lol…that could be taken wrongly!
P.S.. don't mind the missing paint on the hitch. I had to haul a trailer around with little kids in it last night, so the paint came off. I'm going to repaint it, and put some kind of a rubber gasket or something there to prevent the trailer tongue from rubbing the paint off again.

All in all, I’m pleased with the SX now, and learned a lot during this whole thing, thanks to you guys and some examining of the bike and its parts on my part. I know its not a big thing where thanking people is necessary…but I definitely need to thank some people.
Huffa is one of the major ones. He helped me out a lot with this whole thing… he is the one that found the SuperTrapp for me and I thank him A LOT for that. I love that thing! Lol
bigredhead.. 250sxwheelie pop.. thedeatons.. Maine_Triker.. anyone who helped out with my electrical problem.. thanks a lot. It must have took a lot of patience.. lol. And bigredhead has also helped me with a lot of other things too.
Roger (sandpuppi101) at Muddog Restro’s got me some parts, and he is on the lookout for quite a few parts for me. Very nice guy and I would recommend him if you are looking for parts.
TravEX and 350x’inNY.. I definitely need to thank you. TravEX for sending me his headlight for $30 bucks when the cheapest one I could find on eBay was over $50. And Bruce for the lense/bulb. Especially trusting a total stranger and sending it to me for free until I get the money to repay him. That takes a very nice person, and there aren’t many people like that out there anymore.
I don’t know if I forgot anyone, but if I did.. sorry.
All in all.. I’m very pleased with this project. Comments, please J
And if you actually sat and read through all of that.. you are NUTS! Haha
Oh yeah. And I took 200 pictures during this whole thing.. so if you want more pictures of something, just ask.
Total project cost: $1086.56 including the $550 I paid for the SX.
That does not include the $160 for the new plastics that are on their way (but I will not be getting them until Christmas), and I threw away some of the receipts from the beginning of the project, so the total cost is probably actually more like $1100-1150..

Nouse you did an Awesome job on this project. 2 questions.
1. You got those forks and the drum to a bling bling factor. Where is the thread on that?
2. How did you get the billet to mount to the SX since its for a banshee? Redrill holes?
nouseforaname90
09-04-2005, 02:55 PM
Search "Front Fork Cleanup", and I have a "HOW TO" thread on it.
And there are no mounts on the PRM grabbar for a taillight. So I had to drill and tap them. There were no modifications done to the taillight except for me drilling a hole in the back of it so the wires came out the back instead of the side. And other than that, just wire it. It has 3 wires.. the black I assumed to be power/common, and then blue and yellow. Blue is for brake, which makes the lights brighter.. and yellow is for just regular light. I hooked the blue up because it is the brightest. I believe I hooked up red on the SX to blue on the taillight, and black on the taillight to green on the SX, but I'm not completely sure. It wasn't too hard. Just took some thinking.. mostly because in the instructions, they do not tell you which wires are which on the taillight.

No, 250sxwheeliepop.. it took alot more than just wirewheeling the forks. Wire wheeling just gets the crap off. It took alot of sanding to get them smooth and shiney.

And I know that the front brake cable is on wrong. But I am planning on getting new front brakes for it sometime, so I figured why take the time to put it back on right? Because the spring was being difficult to get back on.
And yeah!! Riding sounds awesome. I don't have my liscense yet though, so if we do something, we'll have to come to my house, but the problem is that there aren't many trails or anything to ride. I don't know. If you want to ride, we can figure something out. dirtface lives right by me, so maybe he will want to get together with us too and maybe he has more area to ride.

Why the laughing face? lol
And I got Maier for now. Next year the expensive stuff is comin. I'm going to get a job and save up, and depending on how much I have left after a car and stuff, I'm planning on getting everything powdercoated that is rusted or chipped, and getting new OEM plastics. They were too expensive for now.
Oh, and when I said about the loss of HP with the SuperTrapp and not being able to pull it up in 2nd now, I was wrong. I was going down my road, and topped it out in 2nd, and then shifted to 3rd and gunned it, and the front end lifted up about a foot and stayed up for about 10 seconds. I don't know why it did this. I never had it do that with the stock exhaust on there (and I did it alot), so I can't explain why it did it now.. especially since I can't pull it up in 2nd now. (well I can.. I mean I can't pull it up without sitting way back on the sear or holding the clutch while I rev and let go)

If your missing some midrange or low end, try going down in the # of disc on the Super Trapp.
That's the whole idea and "fun" behind that pipe. Try 9 then 7 then 5 or whatever and see if you feel a power difference. I'm sure a larger main jet will help too though with having 12 in and I think you said you ordered one?
I run mine with only 3 disc in. More interested in low end then anything and like the "quiet" tone of it much more.
Doesn't yours backfire with 12 in?
nouseforaname90
09-05-2005, 07:49 AM
I'm more interested in the speed than power, really.. I didn't loose enough power to worry about it.
No. It doesn't back fire. Only when I hold the throttle at full and then let off and let it coast does it backfire, but it did that with the other pipe too.

I take it then you don't use mapquest much?
Learning this small feature will help you alot with milage & time to anywhere.
Just scroll down a bit from map and on left you will see "get directions to/from this location". All you do is put in your address and click "get directions" and it will give you step by step directions with the time and milage. Try it out.

everything looks great. good luck on the paint lasting on the small stuff, i found out that rattle can chips off very easy. and let me give you one great tip that you'll love me for. remove the seat from the fender. lay it upside down on a bench with a towel underneath so you dont scuff up your new cover. get a heat gun or blow torch if you dont have one (careful!!) heat up the plastic evenly for a good 5-10 minutes. Then set about 50lbs of weights on top and let it sit overnight. Periodically heat up the plastic again with the weight still on it. By morning you should have a seat that sits perfect with your gas tank and it doesn't cost anything.
nouseforaname90
09-05-2005, 12:18 PM
Thanks. I'll try that thing with the seat.
And like I said.. the spray paint is just temporary. Mostly everything is getting powdercoated next summer when I get the money.. except the rims, which I will probably buy some new chrome/aluminum ones.

A job well done, I just picked up another SX last week. It was one of my old ones, since I sold it, it was pretty much beat to death. But for some odd reason it does still run great. But until then.. I have a question. What main jet should I run with a SuperTrapp w/ 14 discs? (I counted.. and it has 14..). Mad max has a SuperTrapp w/ 14 discs and an open airbox lid and runs a 140 main. Should I just keep it the same, or run a 135?

Like for an SX my perfect jetting with air box top off and supertrapp with twelve disks was 138 BUT it wasnt the exhaust that goes to the SX.

When those rear tires wear down i think you should look at going back to silver with the rims or it could just be the tires themselves.. I don't like the booger look. But that's a personal thing, don't mean to be negative.. so please don't take it wrong.. just my opinion is all.

Awesome! Nice pics. I was watching you progress all through when you were doing it. Very clean looking trike and resto well done. Love the look of the rims, exhaust, and the plastics look super clean.

Thanks bigredhead. I plan on getting the rims powdercoated after the paint chips off and when I get the money.
And the only reason I took so many pics is because I was bored and had a camera.. lol.
Lookin for a SuperTrapp, eh? I can personally say that it is well worth it, and the best of luck in your search! lol
And Kintore.. thanks alot. I like the look of the bike, but at first I was kind of wondering on the color of the rims. I didn't like it at first, but I think its starting to grow on me. So I don't know what color I am going to do them in when I get them powdercoated. Decisions decisions..
And yes.. we cut it. Actually I push mow everything (push mowing all the trees, around the pond, house, pool, garage and everything takes over an hour and a half), and my dad mows the rest. We used to just use a Wheel Horse tractor with 60" deck, and it took about 4-5 hours on average to mow it all. Now we use the same Wheel Horse with 60" deck, but have got a Swisher 60" pull-behind mower for it.. so we mow 120 inches at a time and have cut the mowing time down to about 2 hours.

I don't really follow what your saying? With a open air box you would gain some power & speed as long as it's jetted right. Speed, I mean quickness to the top speed of machine.
All depends on the altitude that you live at too when rejetting. Did any of you fool with the needle in reguards to lowering the clip which make it richer. That would richen the mixture from 1/4 to 3/4 I believe.
nouseforaname90
09-06-2005, 08:44 PM
Well from what I was told/remember.. someone said once that taking off your airbox lid makes you loose low end RPM's (power), but you gain top end RPM's (speed). That is incorrect though?
And what do you mean? If you are asking if I messed with the clip setting.. no, I didn't. Or are you saying that I should lower the clip and rejet.. or that I could just lower the clip instead of rejetting? I'm stupid when it comes to carbs, engines, and such. If its not a spark plug, I can't replace it.

Hmm. Well how do I know what one size up is, and where would I get jets for it online? Or would it be cheaper to get them from a Honda dealer?
A honda dealer would know what the next size is and you could get them online at www.servicehonda.com They give up to a 30% discount but be sure your dealer doesn't have them 1st as they (SH) might charge 6.00 for shipping. I'd price them both ways for sure!!

I'm not a carb expert... but i understand the principle.
All a carb does is mix air and fuel at proper proportions.
The jet size is basically a measure of the size of the holes on that brass " jet " the bigger the holes.. the more gas it lets thru, the smaller the jet .. the less fuel delivered.
That's it.
Now the complicated part is that at different altitudes ( you vs max ) will change things, humidity, temps, compresion level, engine wear, etc.. all affect jetting to an extent.
Removing the airbox lid simply lets the carb inhale more air, with the lid on air has to get sucked into the frame from the handlebars and this restricts things a bit.
If you remove the lid.. and put a free flowing exhaust on your engine.. it can suck more air.. blow more of it out wich means it can usually handle a bit more gas to even things out.. hense a size bigger jet.
The whole Plug chop thing comes into play here to help you figure it out, but it's a careful ballance.
Top speed on an SX is limited by gearing.. and engine revs.. you can make it rev higher wich will give you more speed, but it comes at a price.. i don't like revving my 20 year old SX to the moon all the time.. i rather have low end grunt be able to ride a high gear without having to shift as much thru trails. Our friends on the 2005 700cc quads will pull ahead no matter what we do on top end.. but taking them off the line is always fun.
If the machine starts easy, and idles good.. and sounds like it should.. check your plug tip for an indication of how it's breathing and go from there.
If max is at sea level and you are 500 ft above sea level.. his jet size means squat to your bike.

It WILL make you lose low end if it is not jetted correctly. It all depends on how accurate the jetting was to begin with. If it was a bit rich to start out with then taking the lid off would allow more air which in turn leans out the mixture.
If jetting was spot on with cover on and then you took it off you would have to richen the mixture because your getting more air flow.
I had a 125M and tried taking the cover off one time and the thing ran terrible, so this told me that it was running way too lean and would have to rejet and also showed me just how much the stock set up choke the motor but I always ran it with lid on as it was just a "fun" machine that I didn't care about top performance. See, so it highly depends on the airbox design too! Some work quite well with lid on or off well others need rejetting due to much better breathing.
Take a lid off though and it will get dirtier much quicker and thats the trade off of it.
Take the lid off and see for yourself! You will actually hear it sucking more air and it will be intake wise a bit louder then before even with seat on. Drive it in the low end part and try both ways on the exact same terrian. You should feel a difference. I didn't even try that with mine yet!

I'm no carb expert either but ride it on a section of property where your using mid throotle and really give it thought as to how it is performing, then lower the clip one (which raises the needle) anmd see if you get worse or better performance.
You can also tell by doing a plug reading. Know how to do that? Not sure if you were in on that discussion a while back?

Ok guys. Thanks alot. I'll try to figure this out.. lol.
And yes.. I know how to do a plug chop.
And I have decided to keep the airbox lid on as well. I shouldn't have to mess with the needle or anything except the jets with just the SuperTrapp, should I?

I'd use the disks on the supertrap to adjust things instead of taking the carb apart.

With 14 disc on I would think you would because thats almost like having a open pipe on it!
Personally I don't like them that loud at all and only run 3 disc. I'm deaf enough from all the concerts I went to in the 70's

Not yet!! Lol. I will soon, though. Actually I'm considering getting a pair of paddles for it to put on the stock rims for having fun in snow and mud. And then getting some Douglas' to put the Chen Shin's on for summer use.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get the seat pan back to the original bend. Mine has the nose bent up away from the tank, there's about a 2 inch gap between the tank and seat.

Heat gun and bend it back works great. Heat underside.

If you don't have a heat gun, you can just take your seat off your plastics, set it upside down so the seat pan is facing up, and place something heavy on that bend for a day or two and it will fit fine afterwards.
