I just got an 86 350x motor (minus cylinder head and cylinder head cover/valves/cam/ect) and i have a question about it.

I picked it up for 140 bucks, and it has a cylinder on a fresh bore and an aftermarket piston. What piston it is, i dunno.

It turns over easily by hand, but it just stops turning after one full up and down stroke. What could be wrong with it? There is no shifter shaft of magneto side cover on it, but i plan on fixing this motor up to put in my current 350, or find a frame and build another one.

How come my motor does this? shouldnt they be able to keep rotating no matter what? Maybe the tranny is in gear? but wouldnt the sprocket shaft turn with it?

How can a shifter shaft be removed when everything is still there? Was the buy worth 140 bucks?

Thanks,
Mike

Something is jacked up if the crank wont move freely.

ok, atleast i now know where something is messed up...what could be the likely problem if the crank will move freely for a while then finally stop?

is the cam chain missing. the cam chain could be locking up if it dont have nothing connected to the other end.

Timing could be off{in or ex valve opening at the wrong time}?

im leaning towards the timing chain sitting in the bottem of the case binding up on you..

one of my spare 350 bottom ends does this, I think its either in the crank, or the counter balancer. Same type of deal, it would rotate almost a full turn and then lock up solid, even with the cases split I couldn't see where the binding was comming from. I ended up using a different crank/counter balancer to fix the problem. Hopfully its just the cam chain in the bottom end.

yeah the cam chain is MIA, so i assume its hanging in down there.

What should i do with this motor? Besides making it complete, should i make it a higher power motor? Or but it back to stock with a correcly fit piston on a bored sleeve?

Thanks,
Mike
