I've had a bit of time to myself today, so I used it to perform a little maintainance on this '85 350x I recently purchased. It looks like the previous owner took decent overall physical care of the machine, but was rather lax on regularly scheduled maintainance

WOW, is this thing fun! I'm 33 and had one of these new back in '85, but I forgot just how much fun these things really are after 15+ years! Torque abounds everywhere!!

Anyway, amoung a few other maint. items I performed, I wanted to see just how the engine would respond to Redline synthetic automotive engine oil~ especially the clutch operation. I realize that everyone, (including the manufacturer) discourages the use of fully synthetic engine oils due to the wet clutch, but I chose to use it as an experiment none-the-less. The engine is coming down after the first snow fall anyway, so I really could care less if the clutch starts slipping or not~ it's getting upgraded soon regardless of this test's outcome.

I used Redline 15w/50 fully synthetic automotive engine oil we commonly use in our racing engines and the difference thus far is quite impressive to say the least.

Absolutely ZERO clutch slippage... In fact, it's a bit more positive in engagement than it previously was AND the engine/cylinder head temperature has dropped 14* overall compared to what it was using the petroleum-based Honda oil. I used a laser-aimed temperature gun for the data/temp. measurement and hit five different places all over the engine and averaged them all for the final number. The engine runs smoother, there is improved throttle response, the transmission shifts easier and the entire engine/transmission is mechanically much quieter overall also.

So far, so good! I'm going out now to work it a little today and see how it responds after a little harder riding time. I thought some of you folks may be interested in the outcome...

BTW- These engines just *LOVE* 108 octane VP Racing Fuel!!! I'll *NEVER* go back to pump gas again with this thing....

FYI if anyone is interested. :)

Update:

Well, I spent the latter part of the afternoon riding my machine in woods trails where there was no real airflow over the engine and the clutch was used A LOT in maneuvering through the trees/weeds.

The bike ran flawlessly with the Redline oil in the engine and the clutch always felt positive and smooth all afternoon~ even in the face of heavy clutch use with high engine heat.

So far I'm pleased with the results of using Redline synthetic automotive engine oil in this thing and I'm looking forward to seeing how the clutch lasts the rest of the riding season. :)

I like the idea of lower engine temps & quieter operation but I'm a bit leery about the long term effect on the clutch. From what you say, it sounds good so far. Keep us updated.

I used Redline full synthetic in my '03 GSXR600 and never had issues.

I have even used there full line in a car that sat for 3 years back in 1995. Tranny fluid, Water Wetter, gear fluid, oil, the works. After a battery change and fuel flush the car started right up. From my experience Redline is the best.

I have used both redline and amsoill with great results. The only time I would recomend useing a "dino" based oil is during break in of a fresh engine (synthetics are just to slick to provide for a timely break in).

I agree with daputz... I have used Red Line and Mobil 1 ritually over the years in both my cars and bikes and it is spectacular.... My motorcycles (modern sportbikes, all wet clutches) always got Red Line, and had zero defects... Good on ya for going against all the BS claims... Now if we could just get people to stop listening to Jiffy Lube and start running extended drain intervals... My Mitsubishi Lancer (2002 model) has 109k miles on it, using Mobil 1 inthe engine, and Red Line gear oil in the tranny, with the oil run for 10k miles between changes, 5k between filter changes, and everything is perfect, zero defects... long live synthetic oils!!
