Hello,
My 85 (Stock) ATC 250R carb seems to be running rich on the low end.(been like that since i bought it, even tried lowering and raising jets, plug chops, etc.)
i was thinking of rebuilding it , but i heard the oval slide carbs werent as good as a flat slide.
i have 38 AS carbs on my TRX 250R and LT500. Would i better off looking for a diff carb or rebuilding this one?
Thanks

38mm airstryker will be an awesome addition to yur 250r, totally worth it, and if you order it from sudco or somewhere like that they can hook you up with the right jetting and whatnot...

Changing jets won't help your low end. A jet change is needed when your mid to top is rich or lean. Once you dial in your top end then you can adjust the needle for mid and your mixure screw for your low end.

Changing the slow jet helped the low end on my '86 PJ. It had serious breakup going from idle to main until I tweaked the slow jet, now it rips. Since the 85 is basically the same design, it should apply to the 85.
But - the float level was also a problem that had to be dealt with at the same time. :wondering
Sounds like good advice to dump the PJ and get a better carb. YES - SUDCO!

A new carb would help performance only if you learn how to tune first. Personaly, I'd pull out a screw driver and turn the mixure screw before I pulled out my wallet.
I Concur With Oldschool. Alls You Need Is An Adjustment To Yours. If You Get A New Carb You Could Spend Hrs Dialing It In. Try Taking Your Air Box Lid Off. Fixed My Low End Troubles On My 86r.

Here here! That needs repeating. :beer Its not about parts, its about tuning.
If you cannot tune the idle mixture with a screwdriver, then there are bigger fish to fry.

Get a rebuild kit. $16.
Should solve most of the carb issues.
