i ordered one of those rebuild kits today, should be here in 3 days, but i was just wondering how hard is it to do? ive taken apart carbs before, but its been a while. is there any pj carb diagrams around? i could really use one. the kit comes with the stock jet, but i have a clamp on filter on the carb, and a slip on. should i rejet?

My rebuild kit came with NO instructions. The manual is absolutly no help <well for me anyway. lol
Do what I didn't do... If you got a digital camera take pics of it step by step. Remember how many turns to get the air/fuel screw out same for the idle screw.
Was the air filter on there before? Any changes or mods may require rejetting.
LOL... I've become somewhat of an expert on carbs over the last couple days.
I had alot of problems with the air/fuel little rubber oring. The one in the moose kit I got was much bigger than the stock one. I couldn't get it to screw back in.

i meant to say air/fuel mixture thing look at the pics I guess all carbs are basically the same.
The middle pic is where I ran into a problem. There is a little flat metal washer and an oring. that goes on there last.

If your talking about this then the 3rd notch (middle) is a good starting point. top clip is lean bottom clip is rich

Its easy, just avoid overtightening the jets, they break easily. Clean out all the air passages with carburetor cleaner and compressed air if its available. Those little basketball inflation needles work great.

A torch tip cleaner works great also for cleaning jets and small passages in the carb.

good news! i just rebuilt my first carb, i think. the weirdest thing happened though. when i finally got the bowl off, i pulled the jets. the main jet is a 148 and the slow jet is a 42?!!?!!?!?! is this a 85-86 carb? because my kit came with the stock 130 main, which isnt even close to 148. nothing fit, except some springs and seals. what carb is this?

Looks like stock to me... but I'm not really qualified to answer. What size is it?????

it does look just like the one on my 250r. by the way that clamp on filter looks bad ass on there.

haha thanks, i dont know why theres a 148 main on it though?! i dont think it has any port/head work to even need that much, and its not running too rich either. a little on the rich side but nothing too bad.
EDIT: something has to be different though, because my air adjust screw that was in the carb was wayy longer than the one in my kit. same thing with the needle, and jets.

That looks like my 86 PJ flat slide, but thats an 84 so Im not sure. Look above the bowl on the body on the drivers left and see if there are numbers stamped in. Then look at Keihins parts list to see if the parts look the same
148 / 42 is stock jetting for '86. Sounds like the wrong carb kit. Can you post close ups of the parts?

thats the jetting i have in there right now, the 148 and 42, i know the kit is correct because it has "83-84 atc250r" in huge bold letters on the front.

Its not the stock carb for the 84 250r. they had a 34mm round slide.
Look for the PJ + a number on the carb somewhere.

Im surprised thats a flat slide carb in an 84, because I bought an 85 PJ and it was round slide. Any chance thats not the original carb? A flat slide is considered an improvement and maybe someone changed it? ??

I just put an 86 250r carb on my 84. havent really had a chance to run it or dial it in yet. Have to get the house done first.

in 86 they went to the flatslide, 84 was origionally a roundslide, looks like someone slapped a 86 carb on your bike, not uncommon.

awesome! this is great! now all i need is like a total low end rebuild to get my 5th gear back and a port job, and it'l be a force to be reconed with.

oh, im good on carb parts i think, i might go down a main or two but i think the carbs good. id like to get a used header pipe, and find some way to fix my trans. so it will shift to 5th.

5th gear sounds like a good job for winter time. Pipe will make a big diff, that the single best improvement for a bolt on part

i agree, it'l go great with the intake mods i have... 5th gear is something im not ready to tackle yet though, i keep trying to find a quick fix, but its not gonna be that easy. i cant split the cases, or pay someone to do it either.
TeamGeek6

Splitting the cases means total teardown, so its a good time to rebuild it if you plan to keep it.
