I am new to the two stroke world. I recently bought an 83 250R. Iwas wondering what oil you use to mix with gas? What ratio should I mix it? Is there any way of telling if the reeds are bad and will it gain performance if I switch to a aftermarket reed? Also what type of oil do you put in bottom end?

find some yamalube 2 stroke oil at you local dealer.

Also what type of oil do you put in bottom end?

I'm new too and just learned the answer to this. Apparently the gas oil mixture goes from your tank to the engine to the reed into the cyclinder so in other words your gas mixture is your bottom end oil.

I mix mine at 20/1, some people mix at 32/1. I use Klotz synthetic. You want to use a good grade of 2 cycle oil. Your bottom end, you are meaning the gear case. correct. 10w30. As for the reeds being bad it will be hard to start, and foul the plug.

I use Yamalube, 30:1, 30W in the Gearbox.

for a mixing oil you should run a high performance oil like Klotz or Amsoil. and for your bottom end you do need oil, 10w30 is right, i always used Gearsaver oil for my Blaster. and if you get aftermarket reeds you should get better throttle response and it should be a lot peppier. if your reeds are bad it should be hard to start and you could have bad throttle response, and possible some strange pinging.

I use Maxima Super M for the premix at 32:1 ratio. For the gearbox I use 10W 30. You don't necessarily need aftermarket reeds, but you want ones in good condition, check yours before going out and buying new OEM's or aftermarket.

Im all about 32:1 with HP2 (honda sysnthetic, I just fell a couple notches in my honor book, lol) Reeds, you need to take the read cage out via the 4 bolts in front of the carb, hold em up to light and look into it, if you see light, most generally its time to replace, reeds offer crisp throttle response not too much on horsepower, but if your current reeds are bad you will notice a difference slappin new ones in. I have gone boyeesen power reeds on both the tecate (runs good with em) and i have them installed on the tri-z just waiting to get the top end back together. Never hurts to replace em.

:wondering

It's true that your premix oil gets down into the crankshaft but your bottom end oil (transmission oil) is completely independant of that. 10w30 is fine for the tranny.

As for the premix, you'll get a lot of different answers on that one. I've been running Klotz Super Techniplate at 52:1 with good results. I wouldn't run Yamalube if I got it for free. Klotz, Amsoil etc are all superior imo. Just make sure you're jetted right after you go messing around with your premix.

My story is about 32-1 Amsoil Synthetic with 10W-30 in my bottom end(just learned that too)

Yamalube 32:1 with dumonde tech racing transmission oil for the tranny. this stuff is magic! Always fresh 91 octane gas. Boyesen power reeds will improve throttle response a bit and usually richen the mixture on the main jet(3/4 throttle to wide open.) They usually lean out the mixture at lower rpm causing snappier throttle response. Woulnd't hurt to put new ones in now. Have fun!

I bought my 83 new I ran Schaeffer's micron molly at 32:1 for years then
ran bel-ray MC1 for a wile at 32:1 then Golden spectro at 32:1 for a few years
not it gets Amsoil at 32:1, never any major problems still has factory bottom
end (knock on wood) now in the trans I just run any quality straight 30 weight
engine oil, for the most part mine has had Valvoline 30W used in it its whole
life I change it about every 4-5 tanks of gas.

this might sound stupid but are you guys talking about plain ol' 10w 30 motor oil?

because im using this 90w gear oil, the price of it is killing me:(.

plain old motor oil, preferably motorcycle motor oil due to anti-friction additives in car motor oil which will mess up clutch plates. i run bel-ray gearsaver in my tranny, klotz supertechniplate @ 32:1 better throttle response than the yamalube i used a year ago.

I run Yamalube 2-R in my bike mixed at 50:1 without anyprobems and great throttle response ....:wondering

I heard over at atvconnection that using regular oil like 10w30 is bad for the tranny? I don't know if its true or not. But there was a fight over it.

Klotz Super Techniplate with caster that you lube up you engine and not a bad idea because of its age i do this on my 86R and as for tranmission Valvoline makes a ATV or Motocycle 4stroke oil that i use and it does wonders.

Im at 40:1 with Bel-Ray HR1 or is it H1R...IDK, but thats what I run and it works great. I hardly ever fowl a plug, and it real good stuff IMO.

As stated before , your ratio and brand of oil varies widely. Pick one and stick with it. If you plan on changing ratio's do it gradually(dont go from 20:1 down to 50:1 in one tank).
As for transmission oils you should try the Bel-Ray gear saver 80w. It has special additives in it for the wet clutch . It made a noticable difference in my R .
