Hey gang,

I just picked up a new (to me)1985 250sx. I have a couple of questions. One is the kick start does not engage, then after several tries it does, but is really hard to get to turn over, why would this be? :wondering :wondering Second, is that it does not shift through the gears (acts like it is stuck in one gear), could this be part of the same problem? I tried to use the electric start to kick it over, but that is not working at all. Please let me know any possible causes..
Thanks for all your help,

Thay are known to have kicker problems.... probably easier to fix the electric start ! and highly worth it !

When was it last run .. how long ago ?

Is the shift lever stuck or does it move but not shift ?

if it's stuck.. you might need to remove the left side case cover and replace a few pins, i did it to mine a while back.. not a huge job .

Congrats on the SX.. once you work out the kinks it's a great machine !

The electric starter will only work if it is neutral and the light is on.

It just sits there and klicks when you shift it. The lever itself does move up and down, but nothing else seems to happen but the klicking sound. It does not feel like it is changing gear at all. I don't have a clue to how long it's been since it has been ran. I could not pass this deal up for 25 bucks, though. :w00t: :w00t: :w00t: :D :D

My shift lever would move and nothing would happen because the inner portion of the shift shaft was broken and the spring dislodged.
Easy fix and cheap.
All you need is a new side cover gasket, oil and a shift shaft which are all readily available.

$25? WOW.
You could part that thing out if all else fails and make a good chunk of money! :beer

I bet you anything that your sprag clutch is stuffed. Thats what causes the kickstarter to slip. And on a rare occasion it will work.

Try to make the electric start work...

If you have a multimeter.. check on DC volt setting to see if your battery still has juice. it should read 13.5 or so volts...

Run wires directly from a 12v battery to the terminals on the motor and see if it turns over. Those starters can be rebuilt.. usually only need brushes and you be good to go.

Like bigredhead said, the starters ARE repairable.
Are you sure it isn't just a bad battery?
That's what was "wrong" with mine.
A trip to Wally World for a new battery and VOILA, reliable electric start.
I've NEVER had to use the kicker on mine.
Believe me, electric start is a beautiful thing. :)
