After a great day of riding Comite River with LaDano and another friend, I took the pull starter apart on my 185s (the rope was stuck out) and found this:

Looks like I'm on the hunt for the spool.

That happen to my friend the other day. HE bought a poll starter rebuild kit off the internet. That included everything except the case it all sits in and decompressin conponets.

I had the exact same problem last year on my 185s.
I got the best darn welder known to mankind to weld it back to a solid state and then got him to grind off the round parts where the dogs sit in.
He did a masterful job. You couldn't tell that there ever was a problem with the thing! And it worked great!

For about two months.

Sadly, it was soon toast, and yours will be too, judging from my own experience. Maybe someone on here has some other cures for that kind of situation, but I asked and, at least at that time, there was no miracle cure that anyone could suggest.
The good news is you can get brand new ones on Ebay, Denniskirk.com, etc... relatively cheaply and you're good to go. Plus if you buy the entire kit you also have all those other parts to use as spares. Or of course you can just buy the spool.

Not the end of the world. :)
Cheers!

I bought a new pully from Honda for $40 Canadian when mine was broken in the same places as yours.
It was either buy the new pully and cough up $40, or take the recoil off every time you wanted to pull it and reset the dogs and springs (which worked pretty good for about a month)

Took the pulley to work and cleaned and MIGed the cracks. Took a die grinder to reshape the journals and clean the welds. We'll see if it holds up, if not I'll try to locate a good one somewhere.

Found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/81-83-ATC-185S-Starter-Pulley-Recoil-Starter_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43977QQitemZ450 3420654#ShippingPayment) without much trouble. Think I'll get one to keep for when the welded one breaks.
