View Full Version : Anyone else use BR8es in their 86R?

I've been trying to fine tune my machine (fouling plugs at low rpm) and installed a BR8es vs the BR9es by accident and it seems to run better (shows better plug chop results from low rpm to full as well). The clymer manual I've got says the BR8es is the plug of choice for winter riding, will there be any problems if I use it during the summer since it seems to perform better?

No, that is what I run in my '86Rs, It will just burn a little hotter.

hotter plug, better burn at low RPM when your plug is getting loaded up, wont hurt anything, as long as you dont jet to lean.

The lower the number for NGK the more heat the plug retains in the cylinder. It's not a hotter spark, it's a hotter environment. You want your tip temp(not engine temp) on your plug to be in the 500-850 degree range. That gives you a decent window of play and in a water cooled motor. That means you can easily move a heat range with out worry. My 250r ran best with an 8 also.

Dynofox, I run a B - 5 or 6 always even in desert riding (110*F), no trouble with overheating or plug damage. Yes, moving to an "8" might make a difference - think about how far that plug is recessed up inside that hemispherical dome - a "9" basically cant "see" the A/F charge.

Moving to an 8 will make a difference and to be honest your lucky you don't have overheating issues running a 5 or a 6.

^^^ I concur!!! I really am surprised you have had no over heating issues as well.......as for those 5 & 6 plugs, lose them like a prom dress!!!

The tip of the BR5 runs about 180*F on idle, why lose it? I get more compression (jis' a little) and much better ignition. The thing about overheating spark plugs happens on overheated engines, not ones like mine that run cool.

Just for the sake of sparing people from bad info I'll let you know that a plug tip will not be 180 degrees at idle. Your plug tip will be in the 500-850 range on a good running machine and with a 5-6 in there it would be at the high end of that if not more. Also who ever told you that a hotter plug would take up more room was wrong. It's the other way around, a cooler plug takes up more space.

Hmmm, my fancy digital infrared thermometer measured the plug tip at 180F... Before you go "sparing people from bad information," go get an engineering education, itll chage your attitude.

They know the truth and my friends know I pilot the John Boat just fine. Now before we get too involed with personal attacks which are strickly against the rules here, lets just start backing some of these wildly new ideas up with some facts and proof. Also, just to laugh at the comment, I'll let you know that I do have an engineering background and I've always noticed that those who brag about it........................

Oldy .... he thinks the tip temp is measured at the plug cap. Wrong end dude.

Where did you read that? My clymer manual says br9es for summer and br8es for winter. Dennis Kirk's referance chart also says br9es.

My Clymer Says 8. But That Is What I Do. 9 In The Summer And 8 In The Winter.
