My friends 82 atc110 smokes like a mother. At idle hardly any smoke, partial throttle a little worse, full throttle full blown smoke. We installed a new spark plug and ran it, we then pulled the plug and its black. Like burnt oil on the tip. Ive been searching like crazy trying to find something other than it needing new rings. Maybe too much fuel? Do you think its the valves or rings or both or what? My guess is these motors are easy to rebuild. I havent done a compression test (no gauge) but like I said it runs and seems to be ok. I just want to find the problem and fix it so we can hit the trails. Also, I need information on carbs. Like the jets and how many turns in/out and what not. I found out the screw by the idle screw is air/fuel for idle. But Im not sure which one is the main jet and pilot jet and what to do if its running too rich.

could be your rings, valve guides and seals. I would fix the smoking problem first before messing with the jetting.

Well we went riding last night for about 1.5 hours. His 110 smoked on and off, mainly at full throttle, but we ran and had fun nonetheless. Its about as fast as mine so it has good compression. I told him we should rebuild it but he said its running so leave it for now, good point.

Valves maybe...........

Sounds like she needs a good top end job. Give it a bore, piston, valve job, new valve seals and it'll be real happy. The motors are not hard to rebuild and parts can be obtained relatively inexpensively. The oil burning is only gonna get worse.

hey, change the oil, put in 20w-50, try it out. make sure it's not over full.

I may be burning oil now, but it will get worse. Beeter fix it now then try to fix after it quits running. Replacing rings is not hard at all to do, but thats my guss thats the problem.

Would we need to get the head hot tanked and reseated? Is it needed to replace everything as in valves, springs, retainers? Wheres a good place for rebuild kits?

Is this a good deal? This would prolly solve his problems... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-85-Honda-Atc-110-Engine-Motor-Top-End-Rebuild-Kit_W0QQitemZ4565308505QQcategoryZ43977QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem

Ok, hes ordering the kit on ebay. What should we do about the valves? No valves, springs, retainers, guides, stems or seals come with the kit. Think we need to replace all that or just the piston/rings/gaskets/valves, guides and seals? Basically Id like to know all the parts he'd need to buy to rebuild. We'd rather have everything we need and do it all at once instead of waiting for different parts to come in at different times. :TrikesOwn

Do a compression check with a compression tester. You will have to take it all apart first to know for sure what you'll need, take the cylinder and head off, and replace the valve seals for sure. Then find the specs for the cylinder to piston clearance and see if thats ok, my guess is that the piston or cylinder or both are worn out, but find the specs for the piston and bore and compare them to that.

This will tell you if you need to have it bored out to the next oversize.

lots of good info in this thread.

Do you think it is worth it for a 300 lbs 110 honda 3 wheeler?

It's worth it if you think it is. It is possible you could probaly find another 110 from a farmer for $150 with a good motor, that is probaly near the same price or less that you'll pay for a top end job. But I don't think it's worth it putting a high compression piston in and other stuff like that, just keep that stock.

I would say rebuild the motor though, you'll learn something new.

No and maybe no. I use Oven Cleaner, it melts dried up oil and carbon deposits right now! Dont get it on your skin, its caustic. Do compression check before tearing it down, thatll help you identify whether its rings or not.

Check flatness of the head on plate glass after the head is cleaned.

You can tell if its oil smoke or fuel smoke by smelling the exhaust. Excess oil usually leaves an oil film on the muffler outlet.

Also make sure its not something like a blocked crankcase vent hose.
