I just recently got 2 stock 86 r's and on both of them the entire exhaust system is loose. All the bolts are tight and the grommets don't appear worn, maybe they are though. The pipe and silencer rattle about 1/2inch with everything tight. Are the pipe springs worn out? But then why does the silencer rattle also? Is this just normal on these? They are both pretty clean and well kept. If I go to an aftermarket exhaust what do you all suggest? I ride dunes and desert. It needs to be spark arrested. Thank you for any help.

DK has a good selection of pipes and Silencers DG is mid to upper ranger power. I really feel it on my Z. Fatty pipe offers better bottom and top power. I would go with the FMF pipe. http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/MMYSkuDisplay.jsp;jsessionid=0ZSD1WIW1CL1HLA0WTKSM 4VMDK0NKIV0?leafCatId=10901&catId=109&store=Main&mmyId=11512

The stock exhaust set up on 85-86 R's is made to move somewhat due to the rubber grommets/mounts. 1/2" sounds about right, but it shouldn't rattle. Mote than likely, the rubber mounts are shot as are the springs that hold it to the cylinder.
As for aftermarket exhausts, quite a few are still available for these old beasts from FMF, DG, Paul Turner, CT, ESR, etc. Each has it's own power characteristics and most on this forum that have used them swear by the Paul Turner set up although the others are good as well. Personally, I have an FMF 'fatty' pipe with a Turbine Core spark arrestor and am happy with it. As for spark arrestors, as far as I know, FMF is the only company you can still buy them from.

Thanks, I will replace the springs and grommets and start saving for the fmf system as I need the spark arrestor. Unless the turner system just kills the fmf in top end. Can I use the fmf silencer on the turner pipe?

I have a DG pipe and an FMF silencer on mine. I'm happy, especially when I smoke my friends 400ex, and all the blasters around here!!! :w00t:

9 times out of 10 you can mix and match pipes and silencers without affecting performance or having major mounting issues. But more often than not, no matter how hard the pipe mfgs. try, the silencer mounts don't quite line up with the frame mounts and a little custom bracketry is in order if you want the silencer to be straight, level and look sano.

The stock setup uses an exhaust ring and seal at the flange on the cylinder. This helps keep the pipe tight there and prevents leakage. There is a rubber sleeve with two springs around it between the pipe and silencer, to keep them snug together. The springs that hold everything together do weaken over time, it might be time to replace them. If you do go with an aftermarket setup, be prepared to make a bracket or two to get everything straight, like sandman said.
