i got a free, well worn '83 atc 200, after winning a ebay bid for a cdi module i got it running, its a real smoker, ive had 2-cycles that didnt fog for insects this bad. but if you run it hard for a while it doesnt seem to smoke quite as bad. doesnt have any rod or valve train noise, think its rings or guides? ive almost thought about running 2-cycle oil in the crankcase, but dont know if the tranny would survive, ive got valveoline 20w-50 motorcycle oil in it now. there is a shaft sticking out from the side of the bottom section of the recoil unit, it is splined and moves with the shifter, what is this for? lastly, im running bald 22" tires in the rear, the front is a 25" dad followed me with the truck and said im topping out at 35, i thought tis would do closer to 50. would the tire size make that much difference? i plan on going back to the bigger stock tire size when i replace the rears. its really a fun toy, wish id discovered the 3 wheeler a long time ago. for as much as it smokes i havent noticed any drop on the dipstick level, ive put about 4 hrs running time on it. thaks for any help/advise you may have. Dave.

The tranny gear is also used for the clutch on these.. wet clutch !! you can go thick but don't go overboard or she won't shift .
That splined thing is for the Neutral Indicator.. usually a white plastic piece with a red mark so you know when you are in newtral.
Tires.. yes get 25's.. will get the speed up some.
Got a compression tester ? you could check for rings or valves this way !! Test.. then pour a bit of oil in the plug hole.. test again and if pressure goes up.. rings are shot.

Sound like you rings a fried, Try using 10w-40 oil instead. Is your spark plug chard black. When you are burning oil try to use a ngk plug. IT seems when my rings are bad the ngk runs hotter than a champion and burns off more oil.
As for the tires get some knew ones, i love my new carlisle trial pro 22x11-8.00. You can pick them up at your local wal-mart for 44.00 dallors each. There great for mud slinging, but they will destroy your yard. I had them on my old 200s since 96 and they still have 40% tread left on them. They last a long time. I guessing they have 2500 miles on them so far.

looks like im using about 1/2 a qt of oil per tank of fuel. what is normally run in a 4 cycle atc? ive been using the motorcycle oil from valvoline but if a automotive oil will work i might as well use the oil from the car/pickup after i change it. the car gets changed at 2,000 miles and isnt really bad looking, its a little light though at only 5w30. i lost spark again, yesterday i was riding and threw the drive chain as i was going into 4rth at a good clip. i shut it down and walked home to get the tractor with the loader bucket to bring it back home. after getting it all back together again i seem to have lost spark, hope it aint another cdi module, havent had time to check it out, neck and shoulders a little sore, need a break from it. wish i could convert to points and do away with the electronic garbage. had to wait a week for the last cdi box and was 60 from ebay. its almost 150 new from a dealer. found a top end rebuild kit on ebay for 225, might be a good winter project if i can get my ignition problem figured out. then i need a carb, have to run on 1/2 choke. the adjustments seem to do nothing. if im running full bore and turn choke off it will still run but slows down some. is there supposed to be a air filter in the airbox? all i have is this conical mesh screen. guess i gotta get a book for this thing. for a freebie its starting to look expensive. but it is saving wear and tear off of my ranger 4x4!

Whoa....
First thing.. NEVER put used oil in your trike.. period.
Put a foam over that mesh screen somehow.. it's a must . or you will have constant carb problems.. hence having to run half choke all the time.
Get the carb cleaned up .. highly consider a rebuild kit.. 15 to 20 $,
Go from there i guess... but half a quart of oil per full tank of gas.. it a SMOKER.... we'd have you running behind eating the dust cloud at all times with that thing !! lol... but hey.. it was free right !
Those honda 200cc fourstrokes .. when fixed up properly should burn barely any oil at all.. my SX looses 1 mm of oil on the stick per oil change !!!! and that's about 30 or so operating hours ! max.

o.k. didnt know what was supposed to be in the airbox, who knows how many have owned this before me, didnt really want to use used oil anyway, picked up 2 more quarts of valvoline m/c oil today, this time got 10w40. i seem to be breaking down closer to home now, first time i had to walk it was nearly a mile, this last time when i threw the chain i could see the barn. lol . love tractor with a loader, its like having a wrecker if theres no one to help tow it home.
