advancing the timing?

how is this done (i havve an 85 200x) and what do i gain from it.

I would watch advancing the timing with a 12.1 piston, because if you go too far you might burn a big hole in it. Advancing the timing will give you more low end, & take away some top end, Retarding it will do the opposite, more top end power, less low end. Timing can be adjusted with offset keyways that go in the crank where the flywheel goes on.

On the cylinder head of your 200.. there is a metal cover marked CDI on it.. when you remove it there is a metal ring that has a firing mark for the rotor.. it can be moved clockwise or counterclock wise to change the time at wich the spark will happen during the compression stroke.

whenevr i have advanced the timing to any of my machines, it has given me no problems at all, it has enhanced my performance of my engine quit a bit, there has been no problems at all and i have had the timing advanced for a few years

You guys are confusing ignition timing with valve timing.
Advancing valve timing gives you more low end.
Retarding valve timing give you more top end.
On a 200 you would have to buy an adjustable cam sprocket to do this, unless you just want to time it a tooth off and I dont think that will give very good results.

Advancing ignition timing gives more power everywhere. But you dont want to go to far or it will detonate. If you have a 12 to one piston be very careful! Bigredhead has that adjustment down if you're gonna try it. I would def run the highest octane you can find.

ok hotroddal how do you advance it when you do it? and is it harder to start?

I think Jason Hall is talking about 2 stroke timing, advanceing the timing or retarding it alters the port timing of a two stroke so it can shift the power band up or down to some degree.

I think this is why go-ped guys will run 12 degree retarded timing on some of those weed wacker motors.

You will not gain enough from advancing timing on your 200 cc four stroke honda to be worth the time and potential problems involved.

Idealy you would need a timing light to see how close your current timing is by removing the flywheel timing mark cover.. then fire it up and check what you have now.

then you remove the CDI metal cover on the head.. and loosen up the 2 philips screws that hold the Rotor firing plate forward or backward by a hair... and tighten them up... recheck timing and test.....

But like i've already told you a few times already.. Leave good enough alone for the love of god.

Oh.. and to answer the question in short form.

Advancing timing : Makes your spark plug fire bofore it's supposed to to help ignite the air/gas mixture pre-maturely on the compression stroke, It helps at high rev's as things happen so fast that having the spark at TDC ( Top Dead Centre ) is a tad too late to get optimum BOOOM from the combustion chamber.

Same applies to Retarding timing.. you make the spark happen a tad lateer than usual.

Each has it's pros and cons.

A honda 200 cc motor is meant to be a low end RMP powerplant and be reliable.. not a high rev top end monster.

What you need is an R !!

ok, first what you do is remove the cdi cover and then remove the timing mark inspection cap and find the "T" on the flywheel then you loosen up the 2 phillip head screws that hold the golden colored plate, and then once you have done that move the plate to the right just a pubical hair then, turn the engine over so the cdi thing on the camshaft lines up with the line on the other black thing, tightne up the phillip head screws., then look back in the inspection cap and you should just barely see part of the letter T, by doing this i have noticed alot better permormance all around.
I havnt been on to much lately because since skool is out i spend most of my time in the garage, so im sorry for not answering quicker.

advancing the timing on kickstart honda? I don't recommend it at all. i had a local shop rebuild my 250r motor once and when i put the engine in and kicked it, i sprained my ankle. i found the keyway was in the groove all the way and flywheel was advanced.
the motor will fire while you are in middle of kick, with 12:1, it is gonna hurt!
go with the slotted cam gear if you want to fool with timing. my 350x with the cam gear off one tooth would scream! 10:1 and exhaust only.
