Well, i finally got around to rebuilding my carb today... got it all mounted up, went to kick it over and the same thing happened before i rebuilt it. Gas pours out the overflow! it seemed like she really wanted to fire up! what should I do.
Oh, it's a 200x and a moose rebuild kit if that helps. Oh, one more thing... Can the new aftermarket twist throttle have anything to do with it???

This seems to be a problem that a lot of people lately seem to have with their carbs. I thought there was another post about this not to long ago. But, anyway I had the same problem with my carb. I rebuilt it and cleaned the thing until it could be cleaned no more, and nothing solved the problem. I ended up just buying another carburetor.

I have same problem on both my trikes, I was told Its the float not being set right!. that makes sense but after resetting it still does it???? huh..... i dont know either?

When ya rebuilt the carb did * also replace the float? i know alot of rebuild kits dont include a float is why i ask and old floats can get small pins holes in them.

I tried 3 diffrent sets of floats! the rebuild kit I got didn't have one in it. I checket all 3 in a bowl of water and they appered to be fine.

this is weird i cant figure it either, it was happening to my 200s about a month ago when i first got it started working on it, when i first got it. When turned on the petcock it started pouring out off it like no tommrow. Know it stopped but some times if i leave the petcock on, it starts dripping.

My friend has a maual on the 200 hondas, i will try to find something on this situation.

the only thing I use my clymer for is when I run out of toliet paper! :D

I think I'm a bit slow or something cause drawings just don't cut it for me. I need detailed photographs.

i think I may have screwed up on the needle valve (or at least I think that's what is called) There's the needle valve a spring and a little rubber o-ring, then in the drawing they have something else that looks like an o-ring. Not the long pointed one on the top of the carb but a small one inside the carb itself. I don't know what order these parts go in so I winged it!

Do you have a fuel filter on it? If you have dirt in your tank then it will keep getting in the needle & seat & won't let the needle seal the gas flow off. It could also be a bad needle & seat, Float set to high (service manual has float setting), Or a bad float.

with the bowl off. measure from the carb body to the top of the float and it should be 12.5 mm. if not bend the middle tang of the float. its easier with a set of calipers to get it more exact.

theres a clip on the needle that clips on the float middle tang, then does up inside the seat as one piece.

sblt500r
07-17-2005, 01:20 PM
wait it should be 14mm. the float should have a measure ment of 14mm.

i'm gonna have to go back out there and rip this thing off again. what a pain in the rear this is! the one bolt is sooo tight not much room at all. I don't think have it in me right now. too freakin hot and humid out.

Shawn the whole float is a yellow plastic. I don't know if I should attempt to bend it. Unless I'm not sure what exactly you mean.

sblt500r
07-17-2005, 01:29 PM
i think its brass. you bend it where the needle rests. do you need a picture? i can dig out a carb and take some pics. for ya.

07-17-2005, 01:48 PM
you know what, if it is plastic your you can't adjust it. which is stupid. the carb i have has a plastic float. the first picture you would bend the middle tang. and the other pic. shows you how to measure the float height. but if its plastic you can't do either.

you would have to check the seat. the brass piece where the needle seats against. if it has a ring or a dent or ding thats your problem.

and make sure that you did clean it out good.

chris200x
07-17-2005, 01:57 PM
I just pulled the carb. I gotta wait for all the gas to drain. I got my dig. camera with me but forgot the plug. I'm gonna take it apart and start over. I'll take some pics of the parts and post when I get home later.

By tang, you mean that square peice inbetween the two floats right?

chris200x
07-17-2005, 02:00 PM
The part I think I messed up one is in your first pic. The assembly that would screw into the top middle hole. There's a little needle valve, spring, o-ring, and something else but I can't tell from the drawing in the manual.

Try this. this will pin point the problem. With carb and bowl off. rehook fuel line to carb in up right position. turn on the full. The float will be hanging down and fuel will flow. Now gentley push up float simulating bowl being full. If fuel stops then its float. adjust the float. If not its the float valve. replace it (if available). Check tank fuel strainer. inline filters are good insurance also with these metal tanks

that is the slow speed adjusting jet.

chris200x
07-17-2005, 02:19 PM
Here's another dumb question... Which one does the gas line hook up to. The top or the one on the bottom. there are two hookups for hoses one on the top and one on the bottom (one gas and one vent)

sblt500r
07-17-2005, 02:37 PM
its the one thats brass. not the aluminum one. plus the fuel line nozzel should be bigger than the breather.

chris200x
07-17-2005, 05:23 PM
OK this is where I think the gas is pouring from.

Maybe the spring on the throttle cable is too stretched. The first time I diassembled it I just kind of yanked on it  cause I thought it just slid out of there.

The diagram is there just for a reference.

One of the pics is a measurement I took.

those round things are suposed to go on ** float bowl, where your screws go throught. they help seal it i believe, if * didnt have them in that might be why your leaking. there not laybeled in your diagram but you will see them sticking up where your screws go through the float bowl. im pretty posotive thats what they are but that picture is kinda far away from them..

and the gas line goes to the top thingy. just remember that the carb is gravity fed

You talking about these brass things?

200xadam
07-17-2005, 07:17 PM
no im talking about the other picture, those are jets. one is a mikuni main and one is a keihin main (big one is keihin, little one is mikuni)

200xadam
07-17-2005, 07:19 PM
wait nvm that smaller jet is not a main jet, i didnt maximize the picture, the big one is a main jet but the smaller one im not sure. im not a "carb expert" i just know my way around them

chris200x
07-17-2005, 07:23 PM
This? I'm really not too carb savvy you know. Looking at the diagram (12) it seems like the parts go together. I put the little rubber o-ring in the hole along with the spring over the pointed thing. I wasn't sure about the metal round thing in the little plastic bag.

sblt500r
07-17-2005, 08:59 PM
see how you have it it your hand. over the spring put the steel washer then the o-ring then put it in the carb front hole and screw it in. just till it stops, don't over tighten it you'll screw it up. then unscrew it 1 1/2 turns. that gives you a ball park measurement. then you adjust it when its running.

sblt500r
07-17-2005, 09:05 PM
and those 2 things in your hand. one on the right is the main jet and the one on the left looks like # 18 on that diagram. you really don't have to change that. you pull out # 19 to get it out. push it down from the inside of the carb. it should fall out towards the bowl. but make sure it goes in the same way or it won't run right. thats where the needle goes in to.

When you take out the float theres a little pointy thing that attches to it. Check that and make shure that the ruber on that isnt messed up. also make shure its in there correctly, Your problem is defently centered around the float.

chris200x
07-19-2005, 02:49 AM
These are to diffrent kinds of floats I got. Dads posted something on here somewhere about two diffrent numbers on the carb for the 200cc. I have both which should I use? Both float?

Old 179 i didn't get a chance to do that yet my trike isn't at my house

Your having a heck of a time I see but you are learning.

I guess I should really come up (like I keep saying  )

I'll check with the wife and see if Saturday is OK.

Maybe you'll have it fixed by then though ?

The orange plastic float is the same that i had on my 84 200 ES big red.

the black float with metal tab was on my 82 200 .

if that helps any.

^^^ This is correct,.

Brass piece.. then spring. then metal flat washer and then ruber o-ring.. DO NOT Overtighten. or you will crush the o-ring.

The other brass round thing you had in your hand ( without threads ) .. you need to pop the one on the carb out and put this one in it's place.. no threads.. just find something metal and round that fits and give it a tap it will come out.

the new one goes in and will press in when you put things back together.

Haven't had a chance yet. I got a diffrent working carb coming in the mail soon :Bounce so I'll have something to compare it too. I'm gonna try that carb first though to see if she will start. I should of kept one of the others together or took some pics when I was tearing them apart. Would of made things sooo much easier.

How far do you tighten it up? all the way. Then back it out? Do you put the oring in the hole first or last?

Is tere a trick to holding the large oring on top of the bowl in place?!?!

bigredhead
07-20-2005, 05:30 PM
That large o-ring that seals the 2 halves on the carb can be a *****>...... and then some.

I used a few tiny spots of contact cement on mine.

You can also flip the thing upside down on a table surface and gently and slowly wedge it in place and slide the bowl over the table as you go.. once you have it in place put something heavy over it for an hour or so and it will keep it's shape somewhat.

if the old one is in good shape..... re-use it !

The tiny o-ring with flat washer and spring.. well this is where taking your time with the old carb parts comes in. You " Could " have noted it's previous position and turned IN until it seated.. reall how hard it seated and then take it out.. put the new one in and go in the same thing then out the exact same number of turns as the old one. but too late for that.

Turn in as hard as it takes to squeeze the rubber o-ring but not hard enough to crush it.. then out 1 and a half.

bigredhead
07-20-2005, 05:34 PM
Placing a soft piece of cardboard ( magazine cover or something ) over the table top and then the carb will alow the carb to slide over the table while the excess can bend down so you an put the o-ring in place.

When i say i used a tiny amount of contact cement.. i mean the top of a toothpick.. NoT ALOT!.

-----

for the air/fuel screw.. put the spring on the screw.. then the metal washer.. then the rubber o-ring.. hold it and place the carb over the whole thing and screw it in.

sblt500r
07-20-2005, 09:14 PM
i remember puting a new bowl gasket on. what a pain. think i used a little gasket sealer to keep it in the grove.

if you screw the air screw in to hard you'll bend or crush the tip of it and you'll never get it to run right.

chris200x
07-20-2005, 09:34 PM
a little bit of contact cement did the trick. That little oring in the air screw don't fit either. WTF?

bigredhead
07-20-2005, 09:37 PM
Gasket sealer could be a problem.. be careful with that stuff if you use it.

If any gets in the gas and into the jets... you will have problems.

I wish i had a carb in my hand right now i'd post a picture of how to do it on a table top.

sblt500r
07-20-2005, 10:03 PM
i meant use alittle not gob it all over the carb. i really never use it on carbs jusrt trying to give him an idea.

are you sure your useing the right o-ring??????

bigredhead
07-20-2005, 10:11 PM
Oh i know.. i did'nt mean to make it sound like that.. but i thought it was worth mentioning ! sorry.

But as the o-ring will probably pop out a dozen times while he tries to pin it in place some of that sealer will get everywhere.. including all his fingers.. probably his shirt, might even hit the shoes !!!!lol..

Contact cement is ok because 5 minutes and it's dry.. and you can peel it off your skin fairly easily !! ( sucks when you think you've held it long enough you pull your finger back and it stick to your finger !! )..

...

See i did all that the first carb i did...

the 2nd one.. i was shown how to do it on a cardboard on a table upside down and i coulda kicked myself for the hour i spent the 1st time around !! ( i wish i had that on video.. i could sell it on e-bay !! people would piss themselves laughing )

chris200x
07-20-2005, 10:14 PM
Ok, there's absolutly no way for that to screw in there with that oring without bending everything all up! The one in the rebuilt kit is bigger than the old one but I don't know were that one is anymore. :wondering

sblt500r
07-20-2005, 10:54 PM
i don't know chris, you seem to be having way to many problems with this carb. maybe you should have just saved up a couple hundred $$'s and bought a new carb.

well didn't you say you had 3 carbs? and all of those o-rings are gone?

chris200x
07-20-2005, 11:08 PM
LOl... Yup, all gone. it ain't the carb its the dam rebuild kit! I sure ain't gonna admit that it's me!?! Well by the time I get back the other carb will be here and hopefully I'll be good to go.

bigredhead
07-21-2005, 08:51 AM
The rubber o-ring should be the same size as the flat metal washer that goes over the spring.

if it's bigger.. then something is wrong. Was the kit for the same model as your machine ? or a " universal " type thing ?

There is a rubber o-ring on the bowl drain screw i think... that might be the problem !

chris200x
07-21-2005, 09:05 AM
The oring is fatter than the original. If I forced it, it would surely get messed up. It's a moose rebuild kit for the 83-85 200x. I'll try and post some pics.

jenndnn3
07-21-2005, 09:12 AM
You got a couple of orings in that kit chris, you need the smaller one. Or better yet the tiniest one in that kit.

chris200x
07-21-2005, 09:17 AM
hmmm,,, Then something isn't right. Besides there being orings for the bowl and a couple the size of a quarter there aren't any more smaller ones.

bigredhead
07-21-2005, 11:58 AM
the quarter size one should fit under the lid of the carb.. on the SLIDE part.. attached to the thumb throttle cable end !!!

the big one goes on the bowl.

the next size down fits the drain screw
and the smallest for the air/fuel
