Tri Z bad backfire

I just put a new (to me) stator on my tri z and now it backfires when i kick it over. whats with that?

Timing. Make sure it is timed correctly and the key isn't sheared on the flywheel.

How would i go about timing it properly? What way do i have to move the stator plate Clockwise or counterclockwise?
