does it tell * somewhere on the motor what cc it is?

also was a oil cooler and a speedometer common on a old big red the speedo has honda on the face so its a orginal honda part

I know you could get a speedo for it but, I dont know about an oil cooler.
It'll say the displacement at the back of the base of the cylinder.

The easiest way to tell what they are is by the rear suspension. 84 Big Reds had no rear suspension and the 85s were fully suspended. Also the 84 has a high/low/reverse gearbox and the 85 does it in the tranny.

Your saying your Big Reds have oil coolers??? :wondering

If they have speedo's you a lucky guy....

As 200xman said, if there is no rear suspension, then the frame is a 200.

the 85's shift into reverse with a red button on the handle bars left side brake lever.. the 84's had a lever located directly on the left side tranny. you had to pull up on the lever and engage High Low Reverse.

again. no rear syspension on the 84 200.. and the 85's and up had rear suspension and were all 250's.

How do the rear plastics attatch and come off ? the 250's had rear seat and plastics on hinges that lift up.. the 84's had 2 part rear plastics bolted to the frame and only the seat cliped off.

An 85 doesn't have hi/low does it? My buddy has a 1985 250 at my house and I've never noticed low range.

nope.. no Hi Low on 85's and up.. only on the 200 series. 84 and older.

If you have had trikes previously, it should be very easy to tell if its a 200 or a 250. My dads 200 Big Reds have significantly smaller heads (or w/e they are called.. the thingy with the "ribs") than my 250..

Dead givaway for anyone new with trikes.. is Rear suspension.

rear shock = 85 and up
No Rear Shock = 84 or older.

Also the 200 was rope start and the 250 was kick. Both also have electric.

on the tag on the neck it says they're both 1984 I'm 100% sure you answered your own question. Check out this thread: http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=37679 You were "duped" my friend. Personally I say "Caveat Emptor" - do your homework before you buy. You could try taking them back to the guy and telling him either A. - give me some cash back because the value of an '85 250ES vs an '84 200ES is significantly higher or B. - you mis-represented these bike to me in the sale - give me my cash back and take the bikes. I really don't know what legal grounds you have to stand on. Hopefully you got a bill of sale with 1985 250 Big Red on it.

400 for both is a steal no matter what.. don't give them back.. keep one sell the other for 400 and call it a free trike ! good machines.. nothing wrong with an 84.. tough as nails, dependable, and plain fun.

hi i have also a bigred 250 es 1985 but on the tag it says 1984 but model 1985. that mean it was built in 1984 and sold as a 1985 model!

i have a 200M 1984 chain driven and no rear suspension and REVERSE!
now i ride my 250es. i still have my 200M need few parts like new chain and rear sprocket. but that 200M trike went tru everything from steep stairsways to water(IT REALLY DOES FLOAT) i hope the bigred can hold it own too. will find out this spring or this summer . can someone tell me how the bigred 250es compares to 200M, 200S in mud and water? and can someone tell me what is the most they have haul on their bigred 250es. i have been trying to find out what can the bigred 250es pull. can it pull a wagon with some hay on it? just curious! lol

thanks!

mariop293, you are correct. My 85 BR says the same thing. I have hauled 1/2 pulp wood cord of oak in my 4' x 6' tailer It depends on the size of the trailer.

I know this is a very old thread but I didn't see a straight answer given to the OP concerning the sticker on the frame. Yes you can have a 1985 250es with a sticker, MADE/BUILT in 1984. It states the MONTH/YEAR. Both of mine were built in '84. No big deal. Its just like cars. They sell the BRAND NEW next years models in the Fall.

The 250es is like riding a luxury car in the mud compared to the hard tails. Suspension DOES make a difference. Is this what you were referring to, or are you referring only to power/speed? The 200s can hang speed wise.
I have pulled a 16' fiberglass bass boat/trailer with my 250es with no problem. Also my heavy duty 5x10 utility trailer filled with kids, around the neighborhood on Halloween. PLUS my big ass on it (6'1"-280lbs.). They are very tough and durable trikes.

There is a thread titled " let see those big reds working" or something like that. The thread is loaded with pics and stories of big reds hauling all kinds of loads. Even a story about assisting in the birthing of a calf.lol

the manufacture date doesnt necessarily mean its the same as the model year. i have seen 250 quadracers with manufacture dates of late 84, but they were the 85 model, have seen 84 t3's with manufacture dates of late 83, etc etc. alls the manufacture date is is when the bike was built, not the model year. the model year usually is on model sticker with the vin number on it.
