I'm now looking to upgrade/fix the engine on my '85 autoX with the 185s motor in it. What can be done to this little engine to perk it up a bit :wondering ? I've asked before about the 200 top-end swap and decided that would be a waste of time based on the responses  . It has the 200x carb and a cobra exhaust, but other than that its stock. It is smocking bad so it is going to need a new set of rings or a complete bore/piston  . Would a different cam or a high compression piston make any difference?

Thanks!

P.S. I've got film being developed hopefully soon I can get some pics up. :w00t:

Since you need a top end job and already have a 200x carb. I would get a 200 cylinder and a wiesco 10.25:1 compression piston. If you like riding in the highter RPM range then you might want to look for a 200X cam or XR200 cam. Venting the airbox and going with a high flow air filter would help some too. As always it depends on how much money you want to spend. Remember to rejet after you change anything.

After you build the motor up too scuff. I run no air box just strait k&n out the back....... some say thats wrong, and drill holes in the air box.... why?? is there a differance?

well if you just drill out the air box you then have some protection from mud and water. if you just put the air filter on the back with a prefilter it doesnt do a good job in wet climates. i say 200x head and cylinder 10:1 compression web cam and be happy the thing will scoot pretty good

ight heres a short list that will hop that lil sucker up:

200x parts- carb, 10.25:1 wiseco piston, complete top end,

midsized webcam, dg or cobra exhaust, ....prices, if you get the top end from ebay which wil run around 40 and then the cam is about 110, the carb is another 20 from ebay, piston kit- 80 , bore job 20-40 , pipe 100-175 , the total of the biggest numbers there is 465...you can prolly get some cheaper than that

You dont need the 200x head, its the same as the 185 head. A 200x cylinder has larger cooling fins and the sleeve is bored 2mm more than the 185. Now you can just bore your 185 sleeve out 2mm and it will be the same as a 200x... you can use a 200x piston. (You will still have 2mm left on that sleeve also.

Now for the cam I have heard 2 things. Some people say that all 185-200cc honda trike cams are the same, including the 200x, other people say the x one is different I do not know.

I say bore your 185 cylinder out. Find a larger camshaft. go higher compression piston with a pipe and filter.. and your 185 engine is about maxed out...
Other than porting and stroking (but I dont knpw if you can stroke a 185 shaft...)

Anyways thats my input.

Money is not a huge problem, but I don't want to go crazy ;) . I forgot to mention that it has a Moose air filter with no air box lid. The Cobra exhaust is fairly new and will stay. I have also changed the sproket ratio from 11/42 to 12/40. I have heard the same thing about the cam being the same and also have read that they are different. If anyone can clear that part up it would be great :D . I was looking on ebay and there is a company that sells a complete topend replacement with piston, gaskets, the jug and everything you need for around $140. Is that a good deal? They also sell a kit that comes with the above stuff plus valves, cam chain, and some other things for $230. Would it be cheaper to buy my own piston kit and have a local gut bore it and put it back together?

If the kit is " New " hardware.. i think that's a good deal.... leaves you with your originals that you can re-sell on e-bay to recoup some money.....

kn filter, dg pipe, web cam, wiseco piston, port/polish.
i would probably go with a 10.25:1 piston (i would NOT want to run race fuel) and mid range cam.

seeing it will be apart id install new timming chain and tensioner dont want them to take out the motor after you just put all that into it !!
