I have an 85 big red 250. It appears to be locked up due to sitting for a few years. How hard is it to tear down the motor and fix this? Any suggestions would be helpful.

First thing you want to do is find a clymer or haynes manual.. even a honda factory service manual... all can be had on e-bay... almost a must have for stuff like that.

Is is just the rear wheels locked up ? seized bearings ?

or the motor not cranking ? foot crank ? or electric ?

The kick start won't even move. The rear wheels are not locked up. Judging by the kick start i think the motor is just locked up.

Pull the plug.. pour a bit of oil in it..

Drain the tranny oil for an idea of what it looks like..

go from there.

Is the electric start working at all ? be careful if the piston is seized.. don't burn the starter up.. cuz it won't turn and alot of current could burn out the windings.

I'll try that thanks for the help.

was it outside in the rain ? under a tarp ? in a garage ?

is the engine full of water and rust ? etc..

In what condition was it when it last ran ?

4 strokes almost NEVER seize up......... unless something REALLY WRONG was done to it.

It was next to a barn but, covered by a roof, and it ran when it was parked which was about three years ago.

do the gears work ?

can you shift it thru N 1 2 3 etc ???

Maybe put it in 5th and rock it back and forth gently after adding a bit of oil in the plug hole....

remove the valve covers and check to see if they are moving at all......

but honestly.. sounds like you may have to take it out and apart..... don't sound too good.

good luck !

The gears work smoothly, so I guess I will tear it down and see what I can do. Thanks for all your help.

could be anything from a stuck valve ( hitting the piston locking it up ) timing chain problems...

stuck rings maybe..

all guesses tho.

i had this problem with another 4 stroke bike, the BE bearing on the crank was siezed from rust becuse there wasnt enought oil left in the motor when it was parked 10 years ago........
