I was just waiting on Hi-flite to get their shipment of dark blue ink in (lol ... long story). Shes pretty much done - I might add a number plate if I can find one that fits. It took about 20 - 25 hrs total including prep and cleaning for about $580 including purchase price. The engine is modded just a little with a Cobra exhaust and an XR70 race cam with heavy duty springs. Background on the trike: I bought this 1981 ATC70 in 2000 from a guy near me for $50 in non-running condition. He told me it was used by his son, then daughter back in the day and that they raced it locally in the pee-wee leagues. He said while his son wasn't very good at all - his daughter won quite a bit and was the local champion for her age group on this machine. He said she later went on to race go-carts and then motor cycles and he's had the machine ever since. When I got it, it was painted pink and covered with her race number (L9) and a bunch of "Girls Kick Butt" stickers. After trying in vain for a number of months to half assed get it running, I finally figured out that it had a bad points rig and with replacement, she ran ok. I was planning on restoring it the next spring and pretty much "winterized" it in storage near the back of my shed when someone decided they wanted it more than me, and broke through the old clabored siding, filled it with gas and stole her. They must have tried to get her running some ways from my house - but - I had drained most of the oil from the case and they ended up throwing the rod. the next day, I followed the tracks through the snow and had almost given up, when I spotted her sitting in a heap on the side of a rail bridge. She went back in the shed until I moved and then pretty much gave her to a friend to "fix up" for his son. He lost interest and I recovered her from him in March. On winning a good running 1985 ATC70 4-speed motor on eBay for pennies, I decided to go ahead with the resto. I was going to just do a OEM job - but - I had seen too many stock restorations, remembered its racing history and went for something a little different.

1. It has a custom made Hi-flite twotone flame seat.
2. a PRM desert grab-rail.
3. a Cobra full race exhaust.
4. an XR70/CT70 race cam
5. an open K&N cone air filter. carb re-jetted, and rebuilt with a Moose rebuild kit.
6. white Maier plastics.
7. a white Clarke tank.
8. all new bearings.
9. Moose "mini" bend handlebars with Galindo grips and a DK "two finger" style race brake.
10. Paint: I sprayed the frame and forks in Rustoleum dark blue metalic, the engine is Bosch racing red hi-heat brake paint, the rims and axle covers are done in Rustoleums gold hammered metal paint, bronze hammered metal paint was used on the seat hardware and foot pegs, Rustoleum industrial red was used on the hubs, industrial black used everywhere else and everything was triple coated in spray lacquor.

Thats about it ...... here she is love it or hate it. Thanks go out to DrATV at Beatrice Cycles.

I think it looks great! Reminds me of the Mugen racers from the late 70s and early 80s. Very cool!

... nope, I taped off everthing, then mounted the intake and exhaust on top of heavy sheeting and just prepped it by using heavy duty cleaner, my powerwasher and finally steel wool. I used high heat primer then the brake paint.

Great Looking 70 and a great story to go with it. Nice job Man.

I have an 83 that I'll 'pretty-up' one day. Always great to see a custom touch put on a restored project like that.

how does the ride feel with those handlebars? i was gonna order the same exact ones, cuz my knees hit the handlebars sometimes on turns.

They have less pull back than the stockers - so you should see an improvement.

You will need to adjust the cable out so there is a maximum of handle side cable end and discard the perch thumb wheel (you don't need it because it adjusts at the brake).

PRM makes it - and I think it fits both generation 70's. http://prm-atv.com/MN.asp?pg=products&grp=41&mfr=2

does it include the little part that mounts it to the bars? and will it fit perfect even though it says its a clutch lever?

Wickedfinger

Yes. As explained before - you need to remove the thumb wheel adjuster from the new lever and adjust out the cable at the rear, so there's a maximum amount of cable end showing at the bars - without locking the brakes.
