I'm new to the trike game and just recently did a full motor tear down to change out broken cases due to tranny explosion on a 1984 ytm 200. Does anyone know how critical the 4.5 ft.lbs spec is on the secondary clutch springs; i don't have a torque wrench that comes even close. Any tricks or tips to get it close?

4.5 isnt that bad, I'd say just make em nice and snug...maybe 1/4-1/2 turn after resistanse is felt

It will only make a difference if they come loose or if you tighten them down so hard you crack the post off. Basicaly tightend then like any other bolt, it doesn't make any difference to the spring.

It's ok if the spring is bottomed out?

Yes, they should be. The way the clutch works is that when it is just sitting there the springs push out on the bolts which in turn squeezes all the plates together so then the inside of the clutch moves the outside. When you shift the arm that is in the clutch cover presses in on the center of the clutch. This stretches out the springs as the inside then moves in toward the engine. Now the disks are separated and the inside of the clutch can spin separate from the outside part.
