View Full Version : What's the cure for a bent rear axle?

Is there a way to straighten this out, or is the only remedy to get a new one?
My 185s has had a slight bend in the rear axle for some time now, and it seems like it's getting worse. (Or it could just be that I can feel the bend in it more now with new Mudlites on the rear end.) Either way, it's gotta be fixed sooner or later.
What's got to be done?
Thanks in advance!

A new axle would be a good start. Some guys take it to a machine shop to see if they can git'er'done but it's probably cheaper getting a good used one off ebay.

Heh!
A new cheap one would be cool, but there are darn few parts available up in my neck o' the woods, and the shipping, handling fees, duties, taxes and brokerage fees from the Excited States of America last time cost me $40 for a starter assembly that weighs about 1 pound.
Maybe I'll try the machine shop and keep an eye out for a good one for sale......
Thanks for the input!

If they do, I ain't too hard to find.
I think I'll still yank out that axle anyway and hand it over to a machine shop, but also because I'd like to look at the bearings and stuff under there anyway. I figure it hasn't been looked at for 22 years, it's probably time to check it out. And I've never taken an axle out, so might as well learn how as soon as I get a chance.
(Then again, some will say, ''If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Probably good advice...)

I just wonder if you have them straigtened will they be prone to bend easier again?

That's ironic.... I sent him that in a PM about 15 minutes before your post! hahaha Danny is really reasonable on shipping. When I bought my 2-350X rear axles and the NASA 250R rear axle, I think he charged like $15 a piece for shipping. When I bought the "mother load" from him (crate motor, and tons-o-other stuff) I think the shipping was only $80 from Cali to NY.

I've been wondering the same thing. I would think so, but I don't know squat about this stuff.

if you straighten the axle, unless you have the right kind which is about $500 for one, it will easily bend again

In theory, if you happen to hit it in ther exact same place at the exact same angle, there would be charts and engineering graphs to show a theoretic reduction in strength. In reality, youll probably never know the difference, unless the bend was a pretty sharp one. My brother had his straightened from his Banshee by a machine shop in 1995 for $15, and he's still riding on it today.

If you can find a cheap used one, which might not be hard for your model, then by all means, thats the way to go, but if thats not convenient or you cant find one, I wouldnt have any second thoughts about getting it straightened. Its probably the original axle which means it lasted 20 years. Do you really need an expensive aftermarket one or a heavy duty one? Straighten it, and youll probably get another 20 years. If not, youll be out less than the cost of shipping a used one from the US. You risk of it bending again is probably less than the risk of getting a crappy one on ebay.
