View Full Version : Most unusual trike

I have often wondered who has the most unusual trike? What I mean by that is a model with a very unusual mix of mods or a model that nobody else has? IM talking a ONE off, not like a Tiger or Cagiva, cause they are all the same. Im referring to either one off custom built old school stuff. I got to thinking about this in the garage today checking out my YT175, I think its the only one around with the old school mods it has, but my thinking is MYmint87 has the rarest, most special trike of them all, the NIcholson 500 and it is very unlikley that there is another out there. I know Howdy has a super rare trike too. (I wont spill the beans!LOL) Who else has some neat old rare trikes out there?

No problem there. I think it's about time to start showing some pictures of this gem.

A lot of us Old Timers remember reading Dirt wheels, 3Wheeling, and such magazines when they came out in the 80's. I personally remember reading the articles about the machines they modified and tricked out. What ever happened to these machines? Where did they go? Does anyone still have them? What are the chances of ever finding one that is untouched or restorable? I mean common here, it has been 18+ years since they did up these articles. Finding a machine like this is like finding a needle in a hay field ( or better terms finding a 1987 250r ).

Mike in Florida found a Tiger ( we all gasp in delight and awe ). Not too long after that Trikeaholic was able to purchase a Tiger and get it restored ( looks darn good in person also ). Then a forum member ( Whiteman350x? ) found a Cagiva, Mymint found a Nicklson turbo, ect.

My find: Back in 1980 I had went to the Honda dealer with a friend to pick up some parts for his 74 ATC90. I seen the display for the Premier issue of 3Wheeling magazine. I had some change in my pocket and bought a copy. I was reading it when I came across the article “Project 3-Wheeler”. The magazine 3Wheeling took a 1974 ATC90 and they tricked it out ( this was Spring of 1980 ). They continued the Project in the Summer 1980 issue. After reading the articles about this machine I fell in love with it. So I sent a letter to 3Wheeling asking them what they were going to do with this machine. I never got a reply. I was disappointed but not surprised. I was sure they go bombarded with letters about it. Anyhow, I kept thinking about this machine for a long time. But I knew as time went by the chances of ever owning it dwindled, let alone ever seeing it in person. After a few years had passed I had given up all hope.

Fast forward 20+ years later and I just happen to find out who still had the “Project ATC”. I contacted him and he told me it was in rough shape. I didn’t care, I wanted it! After a couple weeks we come to a purchase agreement. NOTE: While I may have paid him for this machine, I still consider him to be a part of it! He took the machine apart and shipped it to me one or two packages at a time( it was cheaper to ship in separate boxes ). Every time a box came it was like a early Christmas present. When ever the FedEx truck showed up I was outside waiting. The driver said to me: “You are always right here to take the packages, There must be something special in them”. It funny because that was the day the rear fender arrived. I opened the box right in front of him and there they were. The fenders had some scratches and such, but you could tell without a doubt what they were off of. The driver said: “3Wheeling?, I remember that magazine”. I then told him about the machine and how I came to have it in my possession. He thought that was wild! It wasn’t long until I had enough of it to start putting it back together. But I held off doing this until I had the motor ( one of the last packages ). When I seen the motor I knew it was time!

My goal here was to Put the machine together in the condition it was currently in and get a lot of pictures. I was then going to take it completely apart and lay it out on the floor just like they did in the magazine ( spring 1980 ). At this point I wanted to send all the parts that I couldn’t refinish myself to MikeVintage to have him restore then. I was going to wait until it was completely restored to show pictures of it. I wanted this thing to be in like NEW condition for TF05. How ever things hasn’t worked out the way they were planned. Do to getting hit with a lot of unexpected bills ( and gas prices ), my funding for the restoration ran dry. So the restoration was put on hold until I have the CASH to do it.

I know that it won’t be possible for me to have this machine restored for TF05. I am still planning on bringing it with me to TF05. But it will be in the unrestored condition. So that I don't have to finance any of the restoration I am saving as much $$ as I can to have it restored for TF06. This machine WILL BE a Trailer Queen. While it runs and sounds great, I do not want to take a chance and break anything. When it's not going with me to TF or such rides it will be displayed at the shop on a shelf ( we are building a Glass encased shelf just for this machine ). To me this machine is one of the Holy Grail of machines. I don't know of any other machines that was featured / tricked out in a ATV magazine that still exsist. I'm not saying they aren't out there because they very well could be. I just haven't seen any other one besides this one.

There will be some doubters about if this one is original or not. But I can rest assured knowing it is the original one. How do I know? I have the documentation to prove it. Yes, the guy I got this from still had the documentation. It don't get any sweeter than that!!

Would I sell it? NOT A CHANCE. I waited 25 years to own this machine, now that I got it I am not letting it go. This is proof that dreams can come true.

Oh My God! Or as the kids say OMG! That is one of the best story's of all time! Wow................That's all I can say! That is indeed one of the most unusual trike story's I have ever heard! Great find! I just doesn't get any better than that!! Although I am still waiting for the Swedeish Bikini team to show up! :beer Sorry I had to throw that in! Now I am going to have to make it to TF 05 or 06 so that I can see it at least once, even if that means driving there, in a rental car, with no trikes, seeing it and turning around and going back home! :Bounce

The motor was bored and stroked to 132cc, it has a web cam #98, 22mm Mikuni Carb with a #120 min jet, S&S Exhuast, High Voltage Stator, and more. Did you notice the Hi/Lo sub tranny? It don't have one anymore.

Hey Howdy, How hard is it to remove the subtranny? I have an atc110 engine that I want to put in a PK Racing 70 frame, but the subtranny hits the swingarm? Do you have a copy of an article how to remove it? If you do post it please. Does the absence of the subtranny make the bike faster or slower?

means alot to me hearing it from you...

I wish you could ride it and see it in person, the way it's soft slushy suspension gives as I kick it over...the way it perks like a hemi when i fire it up...and then riding it is, "like riding a 110 with a serious case of "Roid Rage"....

Yes, the rear tires are tractor tires. I got them at Tractor Supply. I was nervous about them holding up at high speed, they were only designed to go like 10 mph. But I have had them up around 70 ad they hold up just fine. They have awesome traction too.

Why would I need any parts when I got the whole machine? All I need to do is have the parts refinished. As far as having 5 of these 90's just rotting away: How many of them were featured on the cover of a magazine? NONE, ZIP, NADA

FYI, You don't hear me knocking you or your machines. The only reason you don't think this one is special or unique is because you don't own it ( and never will ). So get over it, go on with life. If you can't say something nice then STFU!

what the heck did I say bad?...fricken stupid .......

you must get off on dumping on me

I told you in another thread that they weren't featured....we've already been down that trail, obviously you say yours is the one that was featured and if it was the first, don't you think that they might spit out some replicas?... :wondering .......cause theres a barn full of them here in socal...

so maybe your missing a bolt or something, i don't know, i was being sincere in my offer you, ok? :D

or maybe you want to build a replica to ride since that one is going in a glass case? :wondering

I'm not knocking it, I think its rad, props to you...90's are always fun to bump around on and you got a classic...really cool....I've said more positive comments about yours than you EVER will about mine in your lifetime...

BUT>>>>>>>nothing wrong with me being in love with mine more than yours

(cause I am.....) hehe

and BTW feel free to continue NOT saying anything about "Nick" your silence along with others who hold their tongue speaks VOLUMES :w00t: :w00t:
