i have a 1983 honda 185s but none of it is stock it has a full suspension frame with a fox moto x shock a extra wide axle the tires stick out past the fenders a wide pair of front forks and it is all air adjustible it has flat track tires all the way around the motor is out of a honda xl 185 dirt bike so it has a manual clutch the head is ported and polished it has over size valves and heavy duty springs it has a race cam its bored over bigger than a atc 200 the carb is a mikuni 28 mm with a sudco adapter and a big straight through mega phone type exaust and i just put a new wiseco piston and rings it has a power band like a two stroke and it sounds mean it will smoke a 350x but it runs race gas like 100 octane and the rear swing arm is not home made they bought the frame new and i was told the front forks were purchesed in petaluma califonia for 500 dollars this bike is extremly fast it was specifically built for flat track the power band is through 2 3 4 gears mostly but ihave never seen one like this but i was thinking of selling it and iwas wondering waht it might be worth it cost about three thousand to build wile they raced it

What you might have there is a Nicholson Framed 185....super soft suspension...and it sounds like the real McCoy...

I own a 110 and a 500 with Nicholson frames...

hang on to it...Someday the Smithsonian will be knocking on your door :D

Could you guys identify my 185? It has a suspension frame with a stiffie. Lots of compression, really gets it on!

I'm sorry I cant identify it, I can tell you that Nicholson frames have no identifiable marking or label/stamp/signature...etc.

I can also tell you that several things on your frame lead me to believe its not a Nicholson 185 frame .....

I first spoke with Nick Nicholson about a year ago, I recently had a chance to talk again and spoke with him on lots of issues and topics...he told me that the high production of copy cats killed it for him and that he was forced to move on...

so unfortunately, there's more immitations out there, than there are Nicholson's

Thanks for the info! I have a 200x shock I'd like to put in it, but would prefer one which does not require Me to chop the mounts to install. Any ideas/comments?
BTW, it came from the Porterville, CA area, I heard there used to be 3 wheeler races around there somewhere.

You've got a classic racer and a cool trike..

I submitted several photos to billy, you can find them under Tommy's interview, one "EXTREMELY RARE" pic is a photo out of a "Rocky" catalog..it shows Tommy on a Nick 185...check it out

i know what your saying about modifying the mount, simply slamming an "x" shock on there probably would lower the rear, lengthen the wheelbase and change the rake...not to mention their alot stiffer than the original fox shocks that they used

How about a 81-82R shock? Something like this??? PS -- Is there a way to change the spring w/o unhooking the resevoir line? I know... I should have listened to the "banned and nameless" and had a custom shock made by Works setup.... however, this retro NOS spring came with the cool decal! hahahha

350x in NY, that "R" shock looks like it might work. I only have about a 7/8" slot width it has to fit in. The length of my stiffie right now is 11" :naughty: and any shorter than that, the fenders will rub. If someone has the dimensions of the shock that comes with the frame could You post it?

This trike looks to be due for a serious restore.

I pulled my spring off to paint it. All you do is back off on the preload nuts all the way and the lower washer has a slot on it. compress the spring slightly, pull out the washer and the spring comes off the bottom.

That's the info I'm looking for! What did you use to adjust the preload nuts? I thought the spanner wrench that came for my 350X might work, but no dice.

Wow, where did that come from?

If you look a few post earlier, he said your frame is NOT a Nic... then you said it was a Nic again....

anyhow, I measured up that 82R shock while I was down measuring my fenderbrace and footpegs on my 350X. It's almost exactly 13" center to center... I also have these other 2 shocks on this 83R swinger.... it was given to me this way... NOT anything I'd ever do to it!

like my mint said, there are many copy cats, nic frames had a special build to them, iam not a wise locust of nics but i do know they stand out in design and build style (welds, bends, thickness of tubes) your 185R as you could call it, is probly a rear suspension kit, thats what i think, if it is a custom job more power to you. its a nice trike either way and this comes from a guy who owns 2 185s and had a 81 185s with a 11:1 piston bored to 205cc and had a web cam in it. so more power to you but i dont know who makes your frame

the pipe is for flat track?tt style gave it low center of gravity and no suspension bump
