View Full Version : Tri-Moto trans oil question

As some of you know, I waterlogged my tri-moto. I drained all the gas and float bowls and all that good stuff. I wanted to drain the engine oil, and trans oil and refill with fresh oil. So I drained the engine oil, but then couldn't figure out where to drain and fill the trans oil. Is the engine and trans oil the same? Thats how it is on my motorcycle, and that's how it appears to be on this trike.

They are one & the same.

YES- both the same-
After waterlogging her, I'd run it for about an hour or 2 with the new oil, then change it AGAIN. Cheap insurance if you ask me, and then you're double sure that your crankcase is clean.
you are BOTH wrong- trimoto 125 is a 2 STOKE there is no "engin oil" so to speak of except for the stuff you mix with your gas-thats what lubricates the piston-crank the gear box is a seperate compartment that runs 10w40 for motor oil in ther to lube the transmission-the filler for the transmission should be on the left or right side case

OK- then I stand corrected. A 2 stroke is exactly that. So if yours is a 2 stroke, disregard my post. Homemade did not say WHAT model tri moto he had, and I thought he was speaking of a 4 stroke tri moto. Sorry for the confusion.

He never mentioned which model Trimoto is was. I too assumed he meant a 4 stroke model, if he drained "the engine oil", and you dont very often get water in the plastic injector oil tank. Whether is two stroke or 4 stroke, there should only be one place to drain oil out of the motor.

Sorry, it is a 2 stroke. What I drained out is on the right side of the trike, where the 2 stroke engine oil goes. It's not a pre-mix set-up. So, if the trans fluid is different than the "engine oil", where is the drain and fill for it? Where you put the oil in is not a plastic tank though, there is a plastic cap that you unscrew, and the fluid goes right in the case.

If I understand right, you drained the tank that is separate from the motor that you put 2 cycle oil in. Id be amazed if you actually got water in there, but if that is the one you drained, you also have oil in the motor for tranny and clutch lubrication. The drain plug should be a large head bolt in the bottom underbelly of the motor, usually near the center .

Ya, there was water in there. Unscrewed the cap, and it was to the top, coffee with lots of cream in color. I took out the bottom bolt you are referring to after I drained the 2 stroke oil, and nothing came out. Then I put 2 stroke oil in, then the 2 stroke oil came out that bottome plug under the trike. Thats why I am wondering if it is the same oil.

Whoa...
Somehin ain't right.
should be oil .. 10w30 or 40 ( depends on your local temps ) for the transmission gears.. and clutch..
and then 2 stroke oil for the engine ( yours seems to be auto-injection .. so you don't have to manually mix it ! )
When you fill with gas.. you also usually fill the 2 stroke oil res..
but there should be a seperate drain / fill for the gears.

Son-of-a-bEE-OTCH!! Now I am glad I sunk this thing. I did some detective work and looked at the microfiche for my trike. The "oil tank" it shows on the microfiche, doesn't exist on mine. I think the last owner was an idiot, and so am I. He told me where you fill the trans oil is where to put the engine 2 stroke oil. That's what I get for listening to people. Apparently SOMEONE eliminated the oil injection, and went to premix. Ok, lets think about this for a minute.....................I RAN MANY TANKS OF GAS THROUGH IT WITH NO OIL!!!!!!!!! I can't believe this thing stayed together. Oh, and by the way, read my post here about my problem with OVERHEATING. Thanks everyone for the help, you all saved my but here before I did any REAL damage. Someone slap the back of my head.

Soooo.. you've been running 2 stroke oil in your tranny.. and no oil in the engine !!
wow..
as for the mix.. depends on the 2 stroke oil you are using.. the bottle usually mentions what to use.. 32:1 is usual.

Don't feel too bad. I had a cousin(female) that put transmission fluid in the brake resivour, and brake fluid into the transmission on her car. She later wondered why it leaked from everywhere and the tranny blew up.

Ok, drained 2 stroke oil out of trans, filled with 10W40, mixed 2 stroke oil with gas. Ran awesome. Ran as good when I put it away as when I first started it. Guess I don't need a top end. Thanks for alerting me to the dumbarse mistake that was made. Now I just need to get a front sprocket and I'm ready to go.
